2.2   Maxine Hong Kingston and Her Novels
Maxine  Hong  Kingston  is  the  daughter  of  Chinese  immigrants,  Tom  and  Ying  Lan (Chew) Hong, who immigrated to the United States from China, but not together. The special family background makes Say Yup, a dialect of Cantonese, become Kingston’s first language. At the same time, the storytelling she heard as a child from her mother and other immigrants deeply impacted her later writing. As  a  youngster,  Kingston  was  profoundly  influenced  by  her  parents’  struggle  to  deal with the difficulties of assimilation and their need to remind their children and themselves of their rich cultural  heritage.  Kingston  was fascinated by her mother’s stories of China. She recalled listening intently to her mother’s “talk-stories” about her ancestors and also delighted in hearing her recount mystical Chinese folk tales, and in particular, she was drawn to the narratives  about  women  who  had  been  considered  especially  privileged  or  damned.  These women haunted her as she later sought to give voice not only to their experiences but also her own.
