5.1 Identification of Irony

Confronted  with  a  sentence,  the  addressee  has  to  make  sure  whether  it  is  an  ironic  utterance  or  not, which  is  the  foundation  of  having  a  better  understanding  of  irony.  And  to  solve  the  problem,  the  present study summaries three features of irony to recognize ironic utterances. And besides that, Yus?s model will be applied to identify ironic utterances. There are a considerable number of studies on irony from various perspectives and methods and in this part the highly obvious and significant features will be summarized carefully, which is considered to be a criterion to make sure whether a sentence is irony or not. Under  normal  circumstances,  it  is  often  that  ironic  utterances  are  more  apparent  praise  instead  of criticism.  And  as  a  general  rule,  ironic  utterances  use  apparent  praise  to  express  the  opposing  ironic meaning.  Take  this  sentence  “Tom  promised  his  mother  to  do  some  washing  and  as a  result  he  started  to play  with  the  clothes,  which  made  the  clothes  dirtier.  And  in  this  moment  her  mother  said  that  you  were really a helper.” In this sentence, Tom?s mother used the ironic utterance to show that Tom is a naughty boy, but she did use the word “helper” to take the place of the word “naughty”.

Conclusions 

In this chapter,  major  findings of the present study are  to be presented, along with limitations of  the thesis and suggestions for further research. The present study mainly makes a study on the meaning construction of irony extracted from the novel Pride and Prejudice in the light of CBT.  Three  critical  issues  have  been  specifically  discussed  in  the  thesis,  which  consist  of  setting  up  a criterion for irony identification, figuring out the requisite factors in irony comprehension and probing into a dynamic cognitive model to represent the process of meaning construction of irony.
