However, the identification can be easily reached only when the speaker shares something in  common  with  his  audience.  Ideas,  beliefs,  views  and  values  often  make  it  possible  to achieve  the  purpose.  Given  that  the  speaker  can  work  out  his  audience’s  substance  that they  potentially  share  with  consonantly,  the  audience  would  be  preferable  to  believe  and take whatever he says, and in return they will not be reluctant to identify with him.

2.2 Methodology 
This part mainly focuses on questions of the research, procedures and methods of the research, data collection and data analysis. It will give us with overall understanding on the methodology of the thesis.Based on Burke’s Identification Theory, this thesis aims to analyze Obama’s State of the Union Addresses 2012-2015. It attempts to answer the following two questions: (1) How  content  identification  strategies  are  adopted  to  gain  identification  between the addresser and the addressee in State of the Union Addresses? (2) How formal identification strategies are adopted to gain identification between the addresser and the addressee in State of the Union Addresses?   This  thesis  conducted  the  research  on  Obama’s  State  of  the  Union  Addresses 2012-2015. The research work was done in three steps: First, a close reading was undertaken to classify the different identification strategies in the four addresses according to Burke’s Identification Theory: content identification and formal identification.  Then, identification strategy examples were collected and presented in the research.  Finally, analysis of these examples selected from the four addresses, with the purpose of  identifying  what  identification  strategies  were  employed  by  Obama  and  how  he overcame the division and achieve identification with addressees. In  this  thesis,  there  are  some  data  which  were  done  manually,  such  as  the  frequency and percentage of content identification and formal identification.
