方和判断对方，这就难免会产生分歧、误解甚至于冲突，造成交际障碍，影响跨文化交际的效率和效果。翻译是一种特殊的跨文化交际，翻译工作者必须首先要了解一种语言的文化，才能真正地掌握这种语言。语言是文化的一部分，它受文化的影响与控制。翻译工作者对材料理解的正确与否很大程度上取决于他是否掌握了相关语言的文化。学习一门语言，就是学习讲这门语言的国家的文化与习俗。公示语翻译的最大障碍就是不同语言文化的差异。所以公示语汉英翻译工作者一定要对两种语言的文化异同要有比较深入地了解，才能做到译文在保证跨文化交际的顺利进行方面发挥应有的作用。本文即从跨文化交际的角度，分析了目前公示语翻译存在的问题以及对跨文化交际的影响，并就改善措施提出了一些尝试性的建议。

Chapter One Introduction
1.1 An Overview of Public Signs
The so-called "public signs" are signs that are presented publicly, offering such messages as warning, direction, notification and other literal or graphical information closely related with peoples' social life. The following Chinese definition of public signs is proposed by Prof. Dai Zongxian and Prof. Lv Hefa: "public signs-characters or graphs presented in and to the public for the purpose of annunciating, directing, prompting, displaying or marking them information closely concerning their living, production, lives and living states."
Public signs function sometimes as either directing, which is to provide information or certain services for people, like "Fitting Room"(试衣间)，"Complete Transaction Before Leaving the Counter"(钱款当面点清，离柜概不负责)，or for prompting, which is to remind people to pay considerable attention before they take any action, like "Shark Sighted"(此处发现鳖鱼)，"Warning: Anti climb paint"(注意:涂有防攀油漆)，or sometimes for restricting, which is to set limits and constraints on people's conducts, like "Staff Only"(顾客止步)，"20 MINPARKING"(停车限时20分钟)，or compelling, which is to require people to take or not to take certain actions, like "Road Up, Detour"(前方修路，请绕行)，"Police Line! Do Not Cross"(警戒线，勿超越)
Public signs can be found very easily around us. They are presented in different places for different purposes and functions. For example, We can find public signs at scenic places, which are aimed to remind the visitors to abide by rules or help them better understand what they see, like "Tickets and guide books on sale here for Tower of London"(本处销售伦敦塔门票与导游手册), We have public signs for business and service industry, like "CLOSINGDOWN FOR MODERNIZATION"(装修前大甩卖)，"Duty Free"(免税店). We have public signs in gymnastic places, like "Riprap! Do Not Dive!"(乱石危险!请勿潜水!). We have public signs on the packs of goods, like "totally Cholorine Free"(完全无氯)，"Forest-Friendly Building Timbers"(环保木材).As we can see, public signs are everywhere.
    Public signs bear the following features. First, their meanings are either static,like "Internet Cafe"(网吧)，or dynamic, like "No Tipping"(谢绝小费).Second,expressions in public use are of high conciseness. Public signs usually appear on billboards or posters, which have limited space. Readers may only have a quick glimpse when they pass by. Therefore, conciseness becomes the basic rule in public sign translating.

1.2 A General Review of the Research of Public Sign Translation in China
      Many scholars have written and published papers concerned with Chinese-English translation (hereinafter referred to as "C-E translation") of public signs from the angles of pragmatics and communicative translation. Their articles can be found in Chinese Translators Journal and other professional journals of the same kind. Various errors of public sign translation have been examined and possible solutions were proposed for those problems.
