With the rapid increase of neologisms and the increasingly rapid exchangebetween China and other countries, the translation of neologisms has been taken greatnotice of from related circles, which can be seen from the following cases.Variousdictionaries on neologisms were published one after another especially after 1980s,for example,《英汉大词典》(Lu Gusun, 1993),《汉英词典》(北京外国语大学英语系词典组编, 1997),《汉英新词语词典》(Shi Xiaojing,Wu Jiashui, 2000),《报刊新词英译词典》(Zhang Jian, 2001), 《汉英新词语例解词典》(Wang Renqiang, DuanJingwen, 2002).However, comparing to the thriving publishing of dictionaries, theoretic study ontranslation of Chinese neologisms into English appears to be lagging behind. Thereare a few researchers who made contributions to the study of this kind. The followingare typical research works and papers《:网络热词汉译英之探》(Wang Weidong, 2011),《汉语流行语的翻译策略》(Yu Yiyong, 2010),《浅谈经济改革新词语的英译》(Guan Zhongming, 2009),《中文新词的英文翻译探讨》(Chen Ping, 1997), 《报刊新词英译纵横》(Zhang Jian, 2001),《汉英词语翻译探微》(Yang Quanhong, 2003).Besides, Chinese Translators Journal, the most notable academic journal in themainland of China, has contributed a lot to Chinese neologisin translation. Each issueof it will publish some translated current affair terms that sprang from Chinese societyfor learners’ reference.Disadvantages of previous research:Taking a close look at this field, we can find that the study of the translation ofChinese neologisms has been greatly neglected. As for their translation for foreignaudience, most of those published works or papers concentrate on how to translatefrom the traditional linguistic perspective, hence propose translation methods and setdown principles for translators to abide by. For example, Zhang Jian, TangJianduan(1996) and Yang Quanhong(2003) discuss the skills that a translator shouldhave. They prescribe that a translator should first have a thorough understanding ofneologisms. Secondly, he/she should use different methods to translate different newwords. And thirdly, he/she should adopt the criteria of “faithfulness and smoothness”in his/her translation. And some just give ready-made English translations for certainneologisms but do not provide a systematic translation theory. Especially for Chineseneologism translation, because of the specific purpose and audience, principles oftranslating Chinese neologisms are different from those of other text-types translation.Maybe there are several translation versions of one Chinese neologism like “山寨”(shanzhai, copycat, knock off…). Translators usually consult to dictionaries toanalyze the denotation and connotation of the neologism, and then translate itaccording to the above conclusion. Many previous study also simply gives the readymade translations on the basis of analyzing their connotation and denotation, but inpracital translation, which version is better to choose? Translators are still at lossfacing this condition. In a word, most of the previous study focus on the result of translation, butignored why we choose this method and get this result, that is to say, they lack theguidance of specific translation theories and fail to recognize the link betweenCh
