However,the impacts of Chinese international communication are not comprehensive andsatisfactory even though the status of China has played a decisive role in the whole world.According to the author’s study, there are two main reasons which can explain thisphenomenon. For one thing, most people of different countries don’t have a clear andcorrect understanding of real China; for another thing, the image of the modern China isoften thought as poor, mysterious and even savage in some western countries.According to the above analysis, the Chinese-English translation of the RWG isconsidered to be an indispensable channel for people of both the outside world and Chineseto smoothly communicate with each. As an authoritative official political material, theEnglish version of the RWG not only helps the foreigners to grasp the information aboutChina but also improves China’s image in the whole world.The RWG is different from other publicity materials. Firstly, the Report reviews thegreat accomplishments made during the past year or the past five years, and outlines theplans of the coming year, even the future five years in politics, economy, culture andeducation, and etc. Secondly, the language of the annual Report has its own uniquecharacteristics, such as plain and accurate words, neat and formal language, smooth andcompact sentences, Chinese special culture-loaded words which has strong charisma.Thirdly, the translators are supposed to have strategic thinking and sharp political insight toeliminate the mistakes which might badly affect China’s international image during theprocess of translation. Moreover, as a carrier of culture and language, the annual Reportindispensably presents not only its unique culture language, but also Chinese people’s wayof thinking (Zhou Ji, 2006:10-11). However, looking back those researches on Englishversion of the RWG, we can easily find that the study on such filed is not satisfying, andfew scholars and researchers have studied it systematically and objectively. Therefore, thisthesis will take Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation theory as its theoretical framework, whichcan give a new point of view to study the translation of the RWG. Under the guidance ofthis theory, we will discuss that how translators make a series of linguistic choices intranslation process. At the same time, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding ofthe process of translating the Report from Chinese to English.Therefore, the significance of this thesis is summarized two aspects. On the one hand,this present research may offer a new theoretical framework for the translation of politicalmaterials. On the other hand, it will provide useful translation techniques for the practice oftranslating government materials from Chinese to English, which will conduct higherquality translation products to enhance effective international communication.

      The author collects both English and Chinese versions of the 2011 RWG as thesubject of research to ensure the topicality of the present research.
