Therefore, it is honored as an encyclopedia of Chinese culture. Since itspublication, many Chinese scholars started to study on Hong Lou Meng, therefore the term"Redology" comes into being, which can be divided in three stages ― old redology, newredology and contemporary redology. Studies on the novel never stop, and are gaining moreand more popularity.It consists of 120 chapters, of which the previous eighty chapters were written by CaoXueqin, and the last forty chapters were completed by Gao E, because Cao died in 1763 dueto extreme poverty. Although there are many arguments and disputes about Gao E，ssupplementation, it does make a completion of the novel, thus we can enjoy and appreciate itnowadays. As the main core of the great novel, Cao Xueqin devoted his whole life into itscreation; therefore, a brief review on his life is followed in next part.Many scholars hold that Hong Lou Meng is a record of the prosperity and declining in CaoXueqin's own family, some even research into the prototypes of those characters in the story.It is widely acknowledged that Hong Lou Meng can not be regarded as an autobiography ofthe author, but the reason why it can be accomplished to become a masterpiece may havesomething to do with the author's family and his personal experience. So it is important tomake a brief introduction to the author and his family.It is recorded in historical data that the Cao family enjoyed generations of prosperity.Originally the Caos were Hans, later one of the ancestors Cao Zhenyan (曹振彦)did greatcontribution to Manchu's ruling of the country when they fought for power; therefore he washonored and promoted, and the whole family became Manchu banner men.
