After that, generations of the Caos had beenhonored and put in important positions by Emperor Kang Xi, and enjoyed fame and wealthfor over sixty years. However, after Kang Xi died in 1722, the Caos lost their favor of hisson Emperor Yong Zheng. In 1727, their land and estates were confiscated because ofembezzlement, so the Caos had no choice but to move to the capital city Beijing in early1728, where they still had a house to live in. At that time, Cao Xueqin was only fourteen.After that, life got harder and harder, Cao had to support his family by selling his ownpaintings and teaching. It is said that it was around the year of 1744 that Cao Xueqin decidedto write the story -— Hong Lou Meng. While in 1762, the only son of Cao died unfortunately,giving the poor writer another devastating strike. And then he became sick and weak, finallypassed away on 12^^, Feb. 1763, which was the Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve.Bom and brought up in a wealthy and noble family, experiencing the great change, andwitnessing all kinds of contradictions of feudal society, all these factors enabled Cao toaccomplish such a great novel, thus we the later generations can study and appreciate it.After Cao's death, Gao E completed the story with the latter forty chapters, mainlyabout the declining of the Jia family. It is well believed that Gao's supplements are not asgood as Cao's former eighty chapters on artistic level, but he kept up to Cao's linguisticconstruction and fulfilled the complete structure of the story, making the finished bookspread and circulate rapidly and widely.

　　
　　1.2 Significance of This Research研究的意义
　　As one of the most representative chapter novels in Chinese literature history, the chaptertitles of Hong Lou Meng are of special aesthetic value and great artistic charm. In presentingthese features, the author adopted so many rhetorical devices. For example, every chaptertitle is comprised of two antithetical couplets. This thesis mainly aims at the translation offive rhetorical devices, namely repetition, euphemism, synaesthesia, metaphor, andmetonymy in three complete English versions (Bonsall's, Yangs', and Hawkes,).According to the previous research, evaluations are mostly made about the latter twoversions from different perspectives and have got their own conclusions, but there are fewresearches on the comparisons of three complete versions. What's more, researches in theperspective of functional equivalence are few, and even fewer are about the translation ofchapter titles under the guidance of functional equivalence, which provides a new criterionfor people to evaluate different translated versions and attaches more importance to thereaders' responses.Therefore, the research significance can be concluded in two aspects. At the theoreticallevel, this thesis discusses how functional equivalence guides the translation of the rhetoricaldevices in chapter titles, which enriches the application range of this theory. At the practicallevel, this thesis conducts a comparison study on the three complete English versions ofHong Lou Meng. It is hoped that this study might throw some insight into the chapter titletranslation of other chapter novels.
