　　Since Chinese and English are two completely different linguistic systems andHongloumeng is a Chinese feudal cultural encyclopedia, it is difficult to indicate howdifficult the translating process could be. Since its coming into being, this remarkable workhas been translated into more than twenty languages with over one hundred translationversions. Due to its overwhelming influence on the world literature, there are numerousresearches and studies about all kinds of different translation versions. So far, most of themjust pay much attention to the two published versions by Yang Xianyi and Hawkes,focusing on the comparative study of the two versions in terms of poetry and lyrics,cultural content, book title, language of the characters in the book, aphorisms and idioms,the title of the chapters, the names of the characters and so on. Unfortunately, after theEnglish version of unpublished typescript of Hongloumeng by Bonsall has been presentedfor seven years, there are less studies and researches and even no works on this translation.So the author chooses the English version in total 120 chapters by Bonsall as a new case.Bonsall's translation is full-text translations of the novel and distinguishes itself from theothers for its important influence and significance.Since 1970s, there is a “cultural turn" on the study of translation, which offers a newperspective for the researchers to study on translation, especially the translations on culturalelements. Translation should not be limited at linguistic level and the perspective of cultureis a new one. So it is very necessary to do the comparative research on the differentversions in order to improve the translation career of Chinese literature especially theChinese masterpiece; and the comparative research work on different versions will alsohelp us to find the main factors that influence the translation of cultural elements, whichimproves the translation of cultural elements, and finally it will contribute to thedevelopment of the translation theory and practice. Besides, the comparison on differentversions is also helpful to the intercultural communication between China and othercountries.Based on He Yuanjian's concept mapping theory, the author attempts to exploreBonsall's translation strategies and their distribution tendencies of indigenous concepts intotal 120 chapters of Hongloumeng and to make a comparative study with Ling Bing'sfindings on the Yangs' version, viewing translation as a cognitive process. To be morespecific, firstly, the present study tries to observe BonsalPs translation of unshared conceptsbased on He Yuanjian's CMT, especially of concepts on customs, idioms, and religions inHongloumeng. Then the author will apply He Yuanjian's conceptual mapping theory toanalyze them respectively, namely, to investigate consequences of the unshared sourceconcepts which are classified into four-strategy catagories as deletion, paraphrasing,substitution, and transplantation.
