Chapter One Introduction

Common English names are a part of English language, thus，transliterations of common English names are also an important part in E-C translation. However, problems emerge continuously in E-C transliterations of common English names. As early as 1916，Chen discussed the inconsistent E-C transliterations of the same common English names.He wrote that people gave different transliterations to the same proper names and commonnames when they translated books in foreign languages. Feng (2008) discussed that sometransliterations were different from the conventional ones. For instance, the name "EugeneNida” was transliterated into “欧根尼?宁达” instead of “尤金?奈达”in a book. Thesecond problem was transliterating French names or German names as if they were English.Dao (2009) pointed out that the same common English names were transliterateddifferently in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. For instance，the name “Bush，，was transliterated into “布什”，“布殊”，and “布希” respectively. In addition, as Tian(1994)questioned, the Chinese character “什” had two pronunciations: /sen/ and /si/. Which oneshould be chosen for the name “布什”？ In conclusion，three kinds of problems abouttransliterations of common English names can be found. The first is that people givedifferent transliterations to the same name by adopting Chinese homophones. The secondis that some conventional transliterations are transliterated differently. The third is thatpeople transliterate the same name differently in different regions.

During the last century, a number of studies were conducted to probe into the issue ofE-C transliteration of common English names. Xu (1848) pointed out in A Short Account ofthe Maritime Circuit that transliterated names were difficult to recognize. This was echoedby Wang (1939) that the same English letter "g" was transliterated into “格，，andsometimes “葛”.Wang (1939) had his own view that “Davis”，a name for both male andfemale, was transliterated into “大卫斯，，and “黨维丝” respectively. Some scholars studiedfrom the perspective of phonetics, matching English syllables with corresponding Chinesecharacters (He&Cheng，1926; Chen, 1912; Pan, 2000; Zhang, 2006)，some proclaimedPinyin was a better alternative to transliterate common foreign names in 1950s and 1960s(Zhou, 1951; Peng, 1952)，some made great efforts to compile dictionaries about the transliterations of common names (Fang, 2004，2011)，some studied transliterations ofcommon English names based on theories such as Skopos theory and Optimality Theory(Zhang, 2008; Song, 2011)，some studied by comparing transliterations of common namesin different regions, and others studied transliterations of common English names bycombining with other disciplines and fields such as machine translation (Zou & Zhao, 2008;Zhou，2009).

Although some findings have been achieved on the principles，methods and standardsin E-C transliterations of common English names, there are few studies concerned thetransliterations from the perspective of letter and letter combinations. This thesis employs the transliterations of common English names in A New English and Chinese Dictionary to study the characteristics and the changes of transliterations of initial “A” and its combinations.
