Introduction

Ci-poetry of the Song Dynasty, also known as Song Lyrics, is commonly deemedto be one of the most splendid literary gems in classical Chinese literature. Moreover,it is supposed to be a better conveyer of poets’ subtle and delicate feelings with itsrefined and delicate long and short lines compared with the neat structure of the TangDynasty poetry. During its long history of evolvement, two schools were graduallyformed, namely, the Graceful and Restrained School and the Bold and UnconstrainedSchool. Viewed as one of the most accomplished representatives of the former school,Yi’an’s Ci-poems received universal prestige for its fresh language and ingenious artof expression. However, despite its important status in the Chinese academic circle, itsintroduction to the English world in the early times seems to be rather sporadic andunsystematic. Though later there did appear some more complete translations, greatdisparities exist in their translation approaches and priorities, and relevant academicstudies remain rather inadequate.The author of the present thesis deems that the primary task of translating Yi’an’sCi-poems into English should be to dig into its most distinguishing features that makeit stand out the Song Dynasty Ci-poetry arena. After careful studies on relevantChinese materials, the author summed up the three most prominent and characteristicfeatures of Yi’an’s Ci-poems: Grace Out of Plainness and Colloquialism, UniqueImages Embodying Cultural Richness, and Particular Pathetic Beauty, and arrangedthe main chapters of the thesis centering on how to convey those distinguishingfeatures when translating Yi’an’s Ci-poems into English. In doing so, the author hopesto first and foremost establish the guiding principles governing Yi’an’s Ci-poetrytranslation, and then proceed to evaluate the various renderings by differenttranslators. Secondly, with the Source Text’s predominant features born in mind, theevaluation of translated texts generally comprises two levels of estimations: first weexamine whether the translator cares to preserve those core literary featuresembodying the Yi’an style in his renderings; and second we analyze variousrenderings by different translators in a comparative context to decide which one gainsan edge in best reproducing the original artistic glamour. Last but not least, all thestudies conducted here, either regarding the ST or TT, serves the ultimate goal ofcontributing to the exploration of the principles and strategies guiding Yi’an’sCi-poetry translation. Therefore, what the thesis seeks to provide here is a newapproach that bases each discussion of specific translating acts closely on the corefeatures characterizing Yi’an’s Ci-poetry, and in the same line of thought probes intothe best effective methodologies applicable to Yi’an’s Ci-poetry translation throughextensive and in-depth analyses of renderings by different translators.Generally, the thesis can be regarded as one of the product-oriented DTS(Descriptive Translation Studies) in accordance with James Holmes’ standards, as hebelieves that “the starting point for this type of study is the description of individualtranslations, or text-focused translation description” (Holmes, 1988:72). In this regard,the thesis includes many most detailed elaborations on certain main translators ofYi’an’s Ci-poetry with many of their renderings meticulously discussed throughout thethesis.
