摘要:Since China has adopted a reform and opening up policy from the last century,the enthusiasm for multi-communication and cooperation between China and othercountries all over the world has also increased rapidly. People from other countries arealso eager to know more about China than ever.


2.1 Previous Studies on Public Sign Translation
Public signs are widely seen everywhere in human life, and applied in variousfields, especially in public areas, involved in accommodation, travel, entertainmentand shopping, such as hotels, bars, restaurants, metro, hospitals, parks, shopping malls,museums, etc. As an important indicator of social environment of city, the quality ofpublic signs translation is the representation level of local internationalization andhuman literacy. In the Reference of Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-ChineseDictionary (Extended Fourth Edition) (2002: 1406), “sign” is defined as “board,notice, etc. that directs sb towards sth, give a warning, advertise a business, etc.”According to Longman Advanced American Dictionary (2006: 1349), “sign” refers toa piece of paper, metal, etc. in a public place, with words or drawings on it that givepeople information, warn them not to do something etc. However, there is no anycorrect explanation of “public signs” from Chinese to English before 2004. ProfessorLv Hefa from Beijing International Studies University defined “sign” professionallyand officially in the book named A Chinese-English Dictionary on Signs (《汉英公示语词典》)(2004), “public signs are terse and explicit words, sentences, evenphotographs that are closely related to daily life, production, ecology and professionsso as to direct, prompt, restrict, warn, or even compel the public". Speaking for thecommon and universal function of public signs, they are of great significance inregulating social behavior, adjusting individual relationship, enhancing mutualunderstanding and some other social aspects. On the other side, bilingual public signsmake it possible for international friends who come to China to make a goodunderstanding of our culture and civilization in China. Therefore, governments andorganizations attach great importance to their regulation and application.

2.2 Previous Studies on Chinglish
In 2006, a new bilingual e-mail program was launched by Chinglish BV, a Dutchcompany, allowing users to read and write Chinese online anywhere in the world bytranslating e-mail messages from English to Chinese and vice versa. Marius vanBergen, the founder and CEO of Chinglish.com(可汉可英.com), states that he hasidentified the 2008 Olympics in Beijing as a milestone in the promotion of theChinglish concept and proposition, “The rally bridged the distance between China andthe West by car. Chinglish.com continues where the rally stops and goes further, notwith cars, but with the vehicle of language.” He also mentions the number ofChinese people who are learning English is 300 million, and the number is growingyear by year. With such a big prosperous future of learning English, numerousChinese learners devote to build Chinglish consciously and unconsciously.
