摘要:Since China has adopted a reform and opening up policy from the last century,the enthusiasm for multi-communication and cooperation between China and othercountries all over the world has also increased rapidly. People from other countries arealso eager to know more about China than ever.
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
China has more closely connected to and communicated with the outsidecountries and attracted foreign tourists and investment simultaneously, which throws atremendous challenge to China government and citizens in various fields forproviding a well and sound environment for investment and tourism.On one hand, China is the top country list of being considered in Asia speaking offoreign investment. On July 5th, 2012, United Nations Conference on Trade andDevelopment has released the “World Investment Report in 2012”. “FDI (ForeignDirect Investment) flows to China also reached a record level of $124 billion, andflows to the services sector surpassed those to manufacturing for the first time. Chinacontinued to be in the top spot as investors, preferred destination for FDI, according toUNCTAD’s WIPS (World Investment Prospects Survey) , the rankings of South-EastAsian economies such as Indonesia and Thailand have risen markedly. Overall, asChina continues to experience rising wages and production costs, the relativecompetitiveness of ASEAN countries in manufacturing is increasing.”(UNCTD, 2012:18) “Reflecting these trends, IPAs largely saw developed country TNCs as the mostpromising sources of FDI in the medium term. Only four developing economies wereranked as the most promising over the period by 10 per cent or more of the IPArespondents. China led the list, with more than 60 per cent of respondents selecting it,thanks largely to the rapid increase of its outward FDI in recent years.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
Since China has adopted a reform and opening up policy from the last century,the enthusiasm for multi-communication and cooperation between China and othercountries all over the world has also increased rapidly. People from other countries arealso eager to know more about China than ever.In China, bilingual public signs do help international friends for a long time.However, not all bilingual public signs achieve effective communication due tovarious incorrect translations. As for the English-Chinese translation of public signs,dozens of scholars and translators domestically and abroad have discussed it fromdifferent perspectives in recent years, focusing on the general types of public signs,including names of shops, roads and institutions, traffic and road signs, names ofexpos and exhibitions, slogans, business signs, etc. The author notices that Chinglishpublic signs possess a large part of incorrect translation of public signs in China.Those Chinglish public signs may not only cause misunderstandings but also spoil theinternational image of China. Thus, it is both necessary and urgent to study theChinese-English translation of public signs, especially the Chinglish public signs, andthen figure out effective strategies to get rid of Chinglish.This thesis aims at studying the Chinese-English translation on public signs fromthe perspective of Chinglish by employing skopos theory. The examples used in thisthesis are collected in some major cities in China. Finally, the thesis puts forwardsome strategies on the improvement of the Chinese-English translation of public signsbased on the classifications and causes of Chinglish. A good cross-culturalcommunications could achieve effectively with proper translation of public signs
