摘要:本文是一片英语硕士毕业论文。文章主要研究英语标点符号的功能,以及其对翻译的影响。The transformation of punctuations must be fully considered in the translationprocess since it is an important means of semantic cohesion. Many translation theoristshave discussed the problems in dealing with punctuations, but most of the researches areabout translation tips.
Chapter 3 Translation Methods of Punctuation Based on ItsMetafunctions
3.1 Comparison of Punctuations between Chinese and English
In the earlier European writing forms, there was no stop or any pauses as recorded inEncyclopedia Britannica. In the late 15th century, a linguist named Aldus Manutiusintroduced a set of ruled punctuation marks including comma, period, question mark, semicolon and colon. However, with time elapsing, these punctuation marks changedtheir meanings frequently. In ancient China, there were no punctuation marks to indicate a pause or stop in asentence. The term “句读(dou) ” was first used in the Han Dynasty which referred to anystop in a sentence at that time.Just as what have been mentioned above, Chinese punctuation marks combineeastern cultures with western ones. Many students neglect their differences and makemistakes in their writing. In this way, elaborating on the comparison of punctuationsbetween Chinese and English is of great importance.

Conclusion
Punctuation, as an essential aspect of discourse analysis, gives a semantic indicationof the relationship between sentences and clauses. Although it didn't get enough attentionbefore, interest in researching punctuation has arisen within the last two decades becauseit has been realized that a full understanding of written language is impossible withouttaking punctuation into consideration. As Fu Zhongxuan (1993) once wrote, “a writer canresort to various forms of makeup or punctuation marks to make a vivid portrayal of acharacter's language and give a visual foil to the corresponding setting”,a good masteryof punctuation can make a great difference among language readers and writers.Punctuation is now a linguistic system although it was originally invented as a device forexpressing intonation in written language (Nunberg, 1990).Through reviewing the development of punctuation and some relative researches, the writer finds that few researches on punctuation have been made. Therefore a morethorough and systematical study on this subject is urgently needed. By applying thetheories of systemic Functional Linguistics, this thesis probes into three metafunctions ofpunctuation marks and comes to conclusion that punctuation does play an important rolein all the three metaftinctions of language. The ideational function of punctuation ismainly realized through its effects on the transitivity system of language. Language canbetter fulfill its interpersonal function with the help of punctuation marks. The textualfunction of punctuation is embodied at different levels.
