Therefore, in the process of consecutive interpretation, it is important to combine as many as possible characteristics of the professor's lectures and to interpret in a style as close as possible to the style of the source language to reflect the professor's style. Humor is particularly a difficult aspect of interpreting and is not easy to handle, as it can easily make the audience feel embarrassed if it is not well handled.
The material for this interpretation task came from a lecture on Sino-US relations, so the author, as an interpreter, had to understand the background knowledge of Sino-US relations, collect professional terms related to international relations, and learn about the diplomatic communication between China and the US in recent years. In addition, in the pre-interpretation stage, the author also searched the Internet for many lectures on Sino-US relations, to familiarize herself with the background knowledge of Sino-US relations and to gain an understanding of the linguistic characteristics of such lectures, which will help the interpretation practice to proceed smoothly. The author also familiarized herself with some interpreting techniques in relevant books and papers during the pre-interpretation preparation stage, hoping to apply them to the process of interpreting practice.
2.2 While-Interpreting
This simulation practice is in the form of English-Chinese consecutive interpreting. The total length of the original video is 64 minutes. The speaker spoke for approximately thirty seconds at a time, after which the interpreter began, but this varies according to the content so that if the speaker has not finished speaking the full phrase, there will be no pauses to interpret. It is also possible to pause earlier if it can be anticipated that the clusters are almost completed by the end of the two-minute period. Equipment for this interpretation includes A4 sketch paper, two black markers, and equipment for playing audio and recording. Before the practice began, the author set up the playback equipment and recording equipment, checking that the video will play properly and that the equipment could save the recording. The author gave a brief introduction to the audience on the topic of the interpretation practice before the event started so that they could better understand the content of the material. The total duration of the practice simulation was 150 minutes and there were three audience members present. One student took photos and video recordings, while another student played a video of the practice material downloaded in advance, pausing once a minute while the interpreter took notes on A4 paper prepared in advance and then interpreted, with a 10-minute break every half hour.
