摘要:随着中国向外界开放和全球化的加速,阅读是现在不仅是一个基本的渠道了解更多地了解世界,但获取信息的主要手段。

reason leading to this situation can be basically reduced to fivefactors: social formation, cultural background, economic situation, as well as teachingmethods and learning problems. If the situation in these counties or places can notchange, even if the experts and scholars try their best to promote their effective andscientific teaching and learning approaches which are very popular in the West, theremust exist some factors still requiring a review on a more basic level than previouslythought. In fact, whenever the problems of language teaching and learning arediscussed, cultural diversities among different countries will absolutely be the firstissue to be discussed. These problems may cover different education structures,different teaching environments and manners, different learning approaches anddifferent demands for language usage in the job market between western countriesand eastern countries. It is well known that language and culture are closely related toeach other, which means that if students want to learn English more efficiently, anenvironment similar to the western culture must be created. Students who had beenlearning in western countries for a period of time may have found that in the classesof western countries, students are active in asking questions and very glad tocommunicate with teachers of classmates in the target language, even in the event ofmaking errors, while the college or university students in China always keep silent, even if they have questions and inwardly want to participate in the discussion. Thesestudents are very bashful of making mistakes in their classmates’ presence whichforms the unique feature in class. In china, the Confucian culture pursues theharmonious interpersonal relationship. According to this thought, in the process oflanguage learning, students had better express their ideas to others because their viewmay be offensive to their classmates. In this culture there are some proverbs peopleabide strictly by: more words more troubles; the noisy bird is easily shot dead; speechis silver, silence is gold; keep your mouth shut but your eyes open; do more, talk less.


Chapter 2 literature review


It is well known that language processing is a mutual result of linguistic rules andpsychological mechanisms. The behavior of understanding language information isoperated within the constraints of information processing system, which relates tocognitive science. Chapter Two discusses the literature review of this paper, in whichthe mechanism of working memory and the measurement of working memorycapacity will be introduced first, and then the paper will study information processingsystem and the capacity theory of sentence comprehension and the important teachingmethod: the lexical approach and then move on to reviewing the research and studyon college English reading comprehension as well as the relationship among workingmemory, lexical approach and English reading comprehension..


2.1 Theories on Working Memory

The central executive is the core part of working memory which is assumed to bea limited-resources attentional control system. The function of CE contains:supervising attention, making plans, retrieving, and integrating information, by which,language comprehension, reasoning, rehearsing information to transfer to long-termmemory and so on, are all handled.
