Chapter Two Literature Review
Four parts are included in this chapter. The first part talks about the brief introduction of TPR method, the second is to discuss the main features of TPR method and the last two parts respectively focus on the foreign studies and domestic studies on TPR and its applications in China.
2.1 Brief introduction of the TPR method
TPR which is short for the total physical response is firstly put forward by the American psychologist James Asher in the 1960s. James Asher has the following opinions: (1) The “tracing theory” tells us that the memory which has the more frequent and drastic associations will be more easily to be evoked. Thus, combining the acts with language is beneficial to keep the experienced things in mind. That is to say, being taught a foreign language through the means of making physical movements will be helpful to a foreign language studying and memorizing. (2) The second language acquisition is similar to the baby’s learning of the mother language. At the very beginning, they will accept as much information as possible, which most of the time is in mandatory sentences. Before learning how to use a language, babies often react to the language which is spoken to them by making some physical movements. The second language acquisition is much like the baby’s language learning process which is in the procedure of listening—making physical movements ---speaking out the language. (3) When babies start to speak a language, the parents will always encourage them to speak more rather than directly correct their mistakes. When the babies grow up a bit more, parents will begin to cultivate the children how to speak better and more accurate. The second language learning is also like this, in which the teacher should not always interrupt the language learners to correct their mistakes, since this will greatly damage the language beginners studying confidence and activeness. After some period of time, teacher can have a higher requirement on the language learners’ expressions and the correction of students’ mistakes will be carried out skillfully which is to protect students’ language learning confidence and make them feel less pressure in language learning process.

2.2 The Features of TPR Method
The first feature is that the main teaching pattern of TPR method is the listening and responding, which is also the most prominent feature of TPR method. The TPR method is based on the children’s language acquisition pattern. Before children start to speak,
