s. This study will prove the applicability of Appraisal Theory in this particular discourse and improve the current mode of evaluation study. Besides, it also sheds light on the reading and writing of fairy tales.

1.3 Methodology of the research

1.3.1 Research questionn
The objective of this thesis is to explore the construction of evaluative stance in the classic English fairy tales. To achieve this goal, the following questions will be addressed:

(1) What is the distribution of evaluative resources in the chosen texts?

(2) What is the function of these evaluative resources?

(3) How is the evaluative stance construed through the whole text?

1.3.2 Data collection

To conduct the research, a corpus of Andersen’s faity tales is established. My research data are mainly downloaded from the website https://www.andersen.sdu.dk/vaerk/hersholt/index_e.html, which is a Danish official website supplying all the fairy tales of English version translated by Jean Hersholt. Ten of them are chosen for the present study, including the most representative five — “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “The Ugly Duckling”, “The Little Match Girl”, “The Princess on the Pea” and “Thumbelina”, while the other five are chosen randomly. The following table is a list of the chosen fairy tales.

1.3.3 Research instrument

The quantitative analysis for the study is operated by UAM CorpusTool 2.6.9. It is the linguistic software developed by Mick O’Donnell which is available at https:// www.wagsoft.com. This software is developed to facilitate the linguistic coding of corpus material and minimizing the amount of coding effort. It allows multiple texts to be annotated with the same scheme, and each text to be annotated at multiple levels, is the ideal instrument for coding Appraisal parameters. Chapter Two refers to a literature review of the study. It provides a brief account of previous studies and the basic concepts of fairy tales, and some noteworthy research one valuation is included .Chapter Three is a detailed discussion of the theoretical framework of this thesis .The sub-systems of Appraisal Theory will be elaborated and a thorough discussion ofthe relationship between these three systems will be given.

Chapter Four focuses on the detailed analysis of Andersen’s fairy tales at local lexico-grammatical level. The distribution of Appraisal resources in corpus will be calculated with the help of UAM CorpusTool and the detailed characterization will beanalyzed.

Chapter Five is concerned with the Appraisal resources in construing the fairy tales as a genre. It will describe how the writer’s purpose is achieved stage by stage through these elements .Chapter Six is the conclusion of this thesis. It will present the summary of the research findings, point out the implications and limitations of the present research, and suggest the future studies in this field.5As is shown above, the software consists of six windows.
