摘要:As the research-announcing verbs play an important role in the research articles,the present study investigates the research-announcing verbs with high frequency inthe textile research article abstracts.

d, investigate, show, suggest.The term "research-annoxmcing verb" is derived from the IMRD model which wasoriginally proposed to analyze research article introductions in English. Generallyspeaking, research-announcing verbs refer to the verbs that are typically used tooutline purposes, announce present research, or announce principle findings.Specifically, research-announcing v從bs can state a purpose,explore a procedure,andelaborate an argument, or state claims or results. There are several researchesconcerning the research-announcing verbs. Williams (1996) investigates theresearch-announcing verbs with hi动 frequency in the medical research report andclassifies the verbs according to their contextual meanings and functions, such asreporting (e.g 5/iovv, find),observing (e.g observe, obtain),showing the method acts(e.g evaluate, study), Meyer (1997) focuses on the group of the verbs known as"coming-to-know" verbs, which refers to the verbs representing the acquisition ofknowledge through the scholar's intentional action. Meyer identifies 58 verbs withthis function, such as find, see, observe, measure, calculate and show. Many otherresearches on the research-announcing verbs cover the verbs with the function ofreporting others' studies and the writer's own researches (Thompson and Ye, 1991;Hunston, 1993; Thomson and Hawes,1994; Hyland,2002). The following part willfocus on the major findings relevant to the research-announcing verbs:"coming-to-know" verbs and lexical verbs of reporting researches.

2.2 Pattern and meaning
With the computer technology developing, corpus has become such a powerfultool that opens a chapter of language description, which makes it available forlinguists to describe language in a more objective and detailed way (Sinclair andRenouf,1988). The bottom-up corpus-based and corpus-driven studies have affirmedthat there is no clear distinction between grammar and lexis. In other words, whatcorpus study shows is that lexis and syntax are totally interdependent. Both differentwords and different forms of a single lemma have different grammatical distributions(Stubbs, 1993,2003). Halliday (1966) points out that lexis (a structured system ofsystem of signs which serves to organize the vocabulary of a language) and grammar(a structured system of choices which serves to organize sequences of signs into texts)are not different in nature, but rather form a unified stratum in the language. Thecontinuum of the lexis and grammar is the source of the meaning construction in thetexts. It's necessary to describe the language in terms of the association betweenpattern and meaning, rather than separating domains of lexis and syntax (Sinclair,1991:65,Hunston, 2002:29). Such patterns range from lexical collocations and idiomsto the phraseology of grammatical items. This section will introduce thephraseological view of language in terms of the lexical grammar (Sinclair,1991,2004),patterngrammar (Hunston, 2001,2002,2003) and lexical priming (Hoey,1991,2005),whichserve as the conceptual framework of the present study.
