Chapter 5 Conclusion

Since the study of translated literature during the May Fourth Movement,most scholarshave devoted themselves to the translation activities and achievements of male translators,while little attention has been paid to the contribution of female translators.From the abovediscussion,we can find that Wu Ruonan has done a lot of pioneering work for foreign dramatranslation and the emergence of modern female translators.

At the end of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,scholarsadvocated translating foreign literary works and introducing Western advanced thoughts andcultures in order to save the country and the people.Wu Ruonan also actively participated inand translated Ibsen’s family drama Little Eyolf.As the first female translator of Ibsen’splays,she challenged the patriarchal cultural tradition and made great contributions to thespread of western dramas in China.Different from other female translators at the same time,Wu Ruonan not only paid attention to issues such as equality between men and women,butalso put her perspective on social ethics,expressing her desire to enter the national socialdiscourse system and broadening the translation theme of female translators.

Based on Toury’s translation norms theory,this thesis makes a descriptive study ofLittle Eyolf translated by Wu Ruonan.From the above discussion,it can be seen that WuRuonan follows the corresponding translation norms in different stages of her translationprocess.First of all,the choice of the texts follows the preliminary norms.The influence ofpolitical and cultural background and the emergence of“Craze for Ibsen”make Little Eyolf’stranslation completely conform to the historical trend.The use of indirect translation alsoshows her pioneering spirit,even exceeding the thinking and practice of contemporary maletranslators.
