The development of corpus linguistics makes a great difference on the study oflanguage and the translation study which is well correlated with language study. Corpusand corpus linguistics are a rising research method in the late 1950s. It provides a widevariety of materials for language study, which can enhance the reliability of the research.

1.1 Research background
Since the middle of 1990s, the translation theorists such as Mona Baker, GideonToury, Miriam Shlesinger, etc. have began to apply the corpus to translation study andmade a description of the nature and characteristics of translation.Baker (1995: 230-236) introduces several specific requirements and ideas towardsthe construction of corpus and the study of corpus linguistics. She holds the idea that thecorpus related to translation study has three kinds, i.e. parallel corpus, multilingual corpus,and comparable corpus. The similarities and differences of two or more texts can becompared by using the parallel corpus.Bilingual or multilingual parallel corpus provides a new way to translation study. Ke(2002: 35) summaries four approaches that the bilingual parallel corpus can be a resourceand a tool are used in doing a comparable linguistic research, analyzing the translators’style, enriching a bilingual dictionary. 1.2 Research questions and significance
The nicknames of Shui Hu Zhuan have very profound connotative meanings.Nicknames should be translated suitably so that it can recreate the characters’ figureswithout any loss of fascination. Among the three English versions of Shui Hu Zhuan,every version has its own charm.Based on the corpus, this paper tries to compare the translation styles of the threetranslators from the translation strategies of nicknames in Shui Hu Zhuan. In view of that,this paper intends to conduct the research from the following aspects:1) What are the differences and similarities of the translation of nicknames of thethree English versions among the three interpreters?2) What are the main translation strategies employed by the three translators in thethree English versions and in what way they are shown?3) What are the achievements and inadequacies among the three English versions innickname-translating?This paper collects the numbers of nicknames comprehensively and objectively andprovides more translation of texts for nickname-translating in Shui Hu Zhuan. What’smore, it provides the research methods for the translation of appellations of other books.

1.3 Outline of the present study
