Therefore, cognitive linguistics, as a systematic discipline that studies the mechanism of language, takes bodily experience and cognition as the starting point, focuses on the meaning, explores the cognitive principles in knowledge structures, and makes reasonable explanations for language. Therefore, with further theoretical discussions, the translation study from the perspective of cognitive linguistics is expected to bring new explanatory power to the English translations of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi.

1.2 Research Objectives and Significance

The study attempts to make a comparative analysis of English translations of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. This thesis aims to achieve three objectives: First, to interpret the appropriateness of the translation and verify the explanatory power of cognitive linguistics in translation studies. Second, to find out the differences among the three core categories of cognitive linguistics in each translation. Third, explore the factors that influence the cognitive processing of translators, and the strategies to achieve the equivalence of cognitive effects.

Based on the ST and the TT, this study makes a comparative study of the English translations of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. It analyzes the linguistic selection of the author and translator based on the discourse, and then evaluates which TT is more appropriate. In terms of the academic, based on cognitive linguistics, this thesis enriches the theoretical perspective of the study of the English translations of Liao Zhai Zhi Yi and provides some references for the English translation of classical Chinese literature. In terms of practice, it hopes that it is helpful to translation practice, discourse analysis and translation research.
