1.1 Source of Translation Practice Materials

The translation materials selected in this report are original English biographieswithout reference translation,which is taken from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’sChapter 17-21.The number of words in the translated materials is 10,020.The bookwas published in 1902 and was written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson.Longfellow(1807-1882)was not only a brilliant American poet,linguist and educator in the 19thcentury,but also an outstanding dramatist,translator,and travel writer.At the sametime,he is also one of the native American writers who was first noticed by the worldliterature community,especially the Chinese literature community.He has madeoutstanding contributions to the promotion of the flourishing of New England literaturein the United States.Longfellow’s struggle experience and the publication of variouspure and beautiful poems are recognized as spiritual books that have changed the fateof countless readers(Liu Shijun,2017).

This book belongs to the Memoir style biography.Historicity and literariness arethe two main characteristics of biography(Yang Zhengrun,2002).Biographicalliterature is historical,so the target text should be faithful to historical facts andabandon fiction in order to meet the requirements of its documentary nature;Besides,itis necessary to have both literary features,endow characters with distinctivepersonalities,and get rid of boring and meaningless statements.The historicity of thebiography is first expressed in the narration of the biographer’s personal history,which describes the events in the past and introduces the background of the era in which thecharacters live.Simultaneously,the book not only describes Longfellow’s life andwork experience,but also creates an image of Longfellow in the history of literature.

1.2 Current Situation of Translation Practice

At present,there are 37 foreign books about Longfellow’s biography(Liu Shijun,2017).These biographies reflect Longfellow’s influence in European and Americanliterature.The following works are the most frequently cited by researchers.Life ofHenry Wadsworth Longfellow and Final Memorials of Henry Wadsworth Longfellowwritten by Samuel Longfellow;Henry W.Longfellow written by William SloaneKennedy;Henry W.Longfellow written by Thomas Wentworth Higginson;HenryWadsworth Longfellow written by Charles E.Norton;Longfellow:A VictorianAmerican written by H.S.Gorman;Longfellow:A Full Length Portrait written byEdward Wagenknecht;Longfellow:His Life and Work written by Newton Arvin,etc.Besides,the history of foreign literature related to Longfellow’s research is as follows:The Cambridge History of American Literature,The Columbia Literary History of theUnited States,An introduction to Fifty American Poets,The Columbia history ofAmerican Poetry,The Literature of the United States,A History of the AmericanPeople,and A Story of the World’s Literature,etc.These works give a certainevaluation of Longfellow’s literary status and affirm the literary value of Longfellow’spoems(Liu Shijun,2017).
