Chapter One Task Description

1.1 About the translation project

1.1.1 Background

The selected material of the translation task is a book on business management. Theauthor of this translation report studied Business English and Business Management at collegeand therefore is interested in reading books regarding corporate management andcommunication. A book called Disappearing Acts: Gender, Power, and Relational Practice atWork read by the author points out that in today’s workplace, “the off-line, backstage, orcollaborative work, and the relational skills this kind of work requires, are not recognized orrewarded at work.” (Fletcher, 2001) After reading this book, the author finds out that thegender bias exists in the assessment of employee performance. Many female employees donot know how to enhance their own effectiveness and protect themselves from gettinginvisible. Since the book targets for female employees, which is closely tied with the author’sfuture career, the author hopes the translation of this book could provide guidance to Chinesewomen on enhancing their effectiveness and protecting themselves from getting invisible.

As an MTI student, the author acquires knowledge on translation theories and methods. It is significant to put the knowledge learnt at class into practice. The translation task is agood practice for the author, which requires the author being able to use different translationskills flexibly. Since chapters five and six (the last two chapters) of this book focus onresearch findings and its implications, having practical significance for organizations andindividuals, these two chapters are translated and analyzed by the author of this translationreport.

Joyce K. Fletcher is a female professor of Simmons Graduate School of Management, and co-director of Working Connections Project, Jean Baker Miller Training Institute, Stone Center, Wellesley College. Before returning to work and writing this book, she was a full-time,stay-at-home mother of three young children, who came across a conflict between her careerambitions and her desire to retain a sense of connection with her family. During the time whenshe felt puzzled about her future, she read a book entitled Toward a New Psychology ofWomen, which had great enlightenment on her. The revolutionary ideas on female within thisbook encouraged her to listen to her voice and question some of the masculine standards andbias in the workplace. Hence, she decided to return to work and started the study.
