This is simultaneous interpreting for an academic lecture at the 10th OverseasQuality Lecture of International Demonstration Base of Jilin University.On October18th,2021,this academic lecture under the theme'Hegel on Freedom andRecognition'was hosted by the College of Philosophy and Sociology of JilinUniversity.

This academic lecture aimed to explore the perspectives of Hegel on freedom andrecognition,including the four models of Hegel’s core value of freedom and theinfluence that Hegel’s recognition brought to other philosophers.Professor RobertStern,from the University of Sheffield,was invited by the College of Philosophy andSociology of Jilin University to give this academic lecture referring to Hegel onfreedom,presenting his understanding and viewpoints on this subject andanswering students’questions.He is currently working on the Danish philosopher andtheologian K.E.Lgstrup,and also on the work of Martin Luther from aphilosophical perspective.

Because of the considerable distance and the severity of the epidemic,theconference was held online.The author was invited by the freshmen counselor tointerpret this lecture so that they may gain a better knowledge of philosophy.Sincethe audience was mostly freshmen with a poor command of the English,simultaneousinterpreting was mainly provided for them to understand the contents.The author,asthe interpreter,was assigned to serve the whole process of the lecture.

1.2 Requirements of the Task

Since the theme of the speech mentioned above is obviously an academic one inthe area of philosophy.As a result,the contents are difficult for freshmen to understand.

Therefore,the audience has the following expectations about the interpreting.They want the author to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the content whilealso maintaining the target language's fluency.To achieve the goal of logic cohesion,the author should make her interpreting clear and understandable to the audience.

And because there is no time for consecutive interpretation in an academic lecture,this task requires a simultaneous interpreter to present the content to the audience,andthere are also some interpreting requirements to be fulfilled during the process ofinterpretation.

Accuracy:As an interpreter,the accuracy of the target text is a significant factorthat could influence the purpose of the task.Also,this academic lecture containsnumerous terminologies that are complicated and professional for the interpreter andaudience.Therefore,in order to improve the accuracy,the author needs to be preparedfor this lecture,including reading papers by Mr.Robert Stern,researching informationabout Hegel to understand the theme of the lecture deeply,and finding some paralleltexts about the speech.
