Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

Many scholars have studied identity construction for a long time. In the theoretical field, there are two main theoretical perspectives on identity construction: Essentialism and Constructivism. The researches of identity have changed from Essentialism to Constructivism (Cui,2019) because the Western thought changed from rationalism to deconstruction and postmodernism. 

In terms of research field, the central disciplines of identity construction study have gradually shifted from philosophy, anthropology, and social psychology to linguistics, pragmatics, or inter-disciplines. 

As for pragmatic identity, the direct source is the classification of different identities in discourse communication of Zimmerman (1998), Tracy and Robles (2013) and the Adaptation Theory of Verschueren (2000). They hold the view that the process of verbal communication is actually a process with dynamic adaptation and selection. 

Zimmerman (1998) distinguished three kinds of identities: discourse identity, situated identity and transportable identity. He considered the situated identity as the center of the discourse identity study. However, many experts abroad studied identity construction from the perspective Interpersonal Pragmatics, such as: Face theory, Face strategy and Politeness Principle. 

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research

Based on the combination of Hyland's interpersonal classification model and Verschueren's Adaptation Theory, this thesis aims to explore the distribution of the interactional metadiscourse, the pragmatic identities of the protagonists which construct by these interactional meta-discourses, and find out how do theses pragmatic identities adapt to the communicative context.  

This thesis has a significance in theoretical field and practical field. From the perspective of theoretical field, this thesis can expand the study of the pragmatic identity which is constructed by interactional meta-discourse from the perspective of Adaptation Theory, so as to help people easily understand that how the pragmatic identity construction helps to achieve effective communication. What’s more, the previous studies on interactional meta-discourse mainly focus on medical discourses, teacher discourses, business discourses, academic discourses and so on, but there are few studies focus on the sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory. Therefore, this thesis can broaden the research scope of the construction of pragmatic identity. From the perspective of practical field, first of all, for speakers, this thesis can make them know how to use the interactional meta-discourses to better construct their pragmatic identity, so as to achieve their communicative goals by adapting to different contexts. Second, for listeners, this thesis enable to help them get to know the communicative goals of the speakers by identifying the pragmatic identity that is constructed by the speakers. Finally, this thesis promotes the integration of the linguistic theory and the literary work, for example, the sitcom like TBBT.
