    In the West, the study of synaesthesia has a very long history which can be traced back to ancient Greece. But from the 19th century scholars began to carry out concrete and systematic studies of synaesthesia from different aspects. In 1920s, Ullmann made a profound and systematic study of synaesthesia from the perspective of semantics. He held that synaesthesia is a kind of semantic change and he proposed the following basic transferring pattern for synaesthetic transfer: touch → taste → smell → hearing → vision, that is to say, synaesthetic transfers tend to go from the lower to the more differentiated senses.[1] In 1989, neurologist Cytowic put forward that “synaesthesia is not merely a kind of metaphor; it is cross-modal mental association as well as a superior cortical function”.[2] Harrison held that probably all human beings are born to have the ability to transfer their senses but it gradually disappears consciously with the increased age of human being. [3]
　　　In China, synaesthesia has also aroused great interest in many fields. In 1962, Qian Zhongshu published his article Synaesthesia, in which he firstly introduced this term into China, and from then on scholars began to debate on the nature of synaesthesia. While in recent years, scholars have made great efforts to explain the nature and working mechanism of synaesthesia from the cognitive perspective. For example, Zhao Yanfang held that the universal human cognitive style consists of the physical synaesthetic experience and psychological synaesthetic experience, namely, from the cognitive space of one sense to the cognitive space of another sense.[4] According to Wang Shaohua, synaesthesia is formed in the process of mapping between two or more senses.[5] In another word, he regards synaesthesia as a kind of metaphor which involves the mapping between different cognitive spaces. Wang Zhihong differentiated synaesthesia and other figures of speech and discussed the issues of using synaesthesia with some other rhetorical devices.[6] And his research shows that synaesthesia can be treated as a special kind of metaphor.
    In conclusion, these studies both in China and in the west have not given a full explanation to the meaning construction process of synaesthesia and could not help us to form a clear understanding of it.
    In order to explain the dynamic construction process of synaesthesia, the in-depth analysis of synaesthesia will be carried out based on the conceptual blending theory.
