Instructions
Assignment 1 is an individual report that builds on the research and analysis discussed in the
ALA sessions 1 and 2. You are required to write this report individually, however you are
allowed to build on the material and ideas that emerged from the collaborative work in your
assignment group.
Assignment 1 focuses on the fulfilment of Intended Learning Outcome 2:
• Demonstrate knowledge of research on contemporary relationship and network
issues.

Assignment 1 Case Scenario and Tasks
Case Study Scenario: New Look Retailers Ltd.
Founded in 1969 by Tom Singh in Weymouth, Dorset (who still owns 22% of this privatelyheld company), New Look Retailers Ltd. has become one of Britain's most recognized apparel brands in the past 40 years. It is Britain's number one retailer by volume of dresses,shoes and denim. The company claims that 37% of British women have shopped at one of its stores last year. New Look has also expanded internationally over the years. As of December 2009, New Look had over 626 New Look stores in the UK and Ireland, in addition to 336 in Western Europe (Holland, Belgium, and France) and a further 40 franchised stores in the Middle East (Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt), Singapore, Russia and Poland. It also owns the French retailer Mim. Traditionally New Look has sourced its products in China and Turkey. To optimise its supply chain, it has opened distribution centres in Singapore and Istanbul.
As New Look is preparing to float on the London Stock Exchange in 2010, it has decided to intensify its international expansion. As Primark, one of its competitors, has recently
expanded into Spain, New Look has also decided to enter the Spanish market, in addition to its planned expansion to the Netherlands. You are working as a member of a team of
consultants, contracted to advise the management of New Look on the market-entry decision to the Spanish apparel market.
Assignment 1 Tasks
Carry out the following tasks in a max. 2000-word typewritten individual report. This report constitutes part of the overall project to advise New Look’s management about an entrymode strategy for Spain. In this report (Assignment 1) however you are not asked to propose any new strategies yet. The aim here is to analyse and evaluate New Look’s existing resource base, networks and relationships.
I. Analyse and evaluate New Look’s resource base and its existing networks and
relationships, using relevant theories, analytical frameworks, models or
concepts, focusing on the following aspects:
1. New Look’s resource base, including its tangible and intangible
resources;
2. New Look’s overall (horizontal and vertical) business network, including
its supply network and distribution network;
