l students boredom , even spark student’s interesting of learning English .Most importantly ,a lot of time and efforts can be saved ,especially when it is used to explain language items and sentences ,that is difficult to explain by linguistic means .
Ⅲ. Barriers in learning English for Chinese students
3.1. Vocabulary barriers
To study a language .We must master a system of letter symbols .Chinese and English belong to different language systems (张维友,2004) Thus . There are many differences between two language family ,especially in terms of vocabulary we will find many compounds when we study Chinese but we will find derivatives when we study English .This is a obvious distinction in vocabulary aspect character is ideograph, a character shows a syllable and a syllable shows a morphemes .So ,we may contact with object when we study Chinese .We can master it from visual thinking way .But English made up from twenty six letters ,letter only give sound to vocabulary .We study English with our abstract thinking way .There is no similarly charier concept with Chinese .English is a system of phonograph (张安得 杨元刚,1999) . So We study English from visual thinking way to abstract thinking way .This is the first barrier for Chinese students of English .For example ,we remember English words with Chinese means .In the process of studying English . Most of Chinese think that every English word should correspondence with every character. It’s easy for us to translate our words when we communicate with others. It’s all chin-English, and main reason for us to influence learning English well.
3.2. Grammatical barriers
Chinese grammar and English grammar reflect that different nations have different thinking way, and different grammatical regulation, because they are different language .For example, we often hear “I think you can not swimming” in the middle school classroom .Most of teacher think this is grammatical error . They teach grammar role carefully. But their students make mistake when they meet this problem again .In fact, this is a result of different thinking way .This is the second barrier for Chinese students of English.
3.3. Cultural barriers.
Most Chinese people only started learning English from the junior high school .In the process of teaching in the junior high school. English teachers follows the teaching mode to teach students to read the words and phrases ,and analysize on this text ,and then guide the students to do exercise .They ask students who can read and write ,at most make sentence .They think that language and culture knowledge are not useful to improve marks .It is all exam-oriented education .Thus ,there are many misunderstanding . when their students communicate with foreigners .For example , Chinese people tend to ask “你有多大了?” And we think this is a concern.
