2.1 Definitions of Key Terms
2.1.1 Definition of Construction
Three representative opinions are introduced here although “construction” has beendefined by many schools previously. First and foremost, what traditional grammar stronglyholds is that the concept of construction was defined by Roman philosopher Cicero whendebating in the first century BC. And then in the middle age, the scope of “construction” wasno longer limited to this, but extended to the grammatical level, which means that“construction” is a word order combination with consistent grammatical structure andcomplete semantics (Goldberg & Casenhiser, 2007).
Another view from the structural linguistics further refined the definition of“construction” in the 1950s and 1960s. Different from traditional grammar, structurallinguistics is preoccupied with exploring the common grammatical features in “fabriccomposition” of word structure, phrase or sentence structure. “Construction” is thegrammatical feature reflected by the “fabric composition” that forms the compound form(Song, 2009).
The third opinion from the cognitive linguistics perspective, it was American linguistssuch as Kay and Fillmore who first extended the scope of “construction” to the field of cognitive linguistics. Although they did not give a strict explanation of the definition of“construction”, they added four explanations in detail to the content of “construction”. Firstly,“construction” consists more contents than ordinary sentence structures. Secondly,“construction” should not be only limited to the description of syntax, but can also be appliedinto phonetic, semantic or pragmatic. Thirdly, part of speech can also be regarded as“construction”. Fourthly, “idiom” can also be involved into “construction”. On the basis ofthese, the definition is redefined by Langacker (1987) and Croft (2001), that is, “construction”is the “symbolic unit” formed by two or more phonetic and semantic pairs or the “syntacticunit” formed by the semantic pairs.
