A Cultural Reflection on Delinquency

Abstract
The subculture has been drawing more and more attention from the society. People influenced by a kind of subculture construct their identity and learn to make sense of themselves and their relation to the dominant culture. This thesis is to take a cultural analysis on the roots of delinquency in British, Wales and American societies, trying to find out the cultural implication of youth culture in criminal behaviors. By taking the Beats and hippies as the example, this thesis reveals the historical background against which the Beat Movement took place; from analyzing Beats' visions and lifestyles, the thesis concludes the weak points of the movement and explains the influences of it on the society, which are direct or indirect cultural backgrounds lying behind delinquencies. A close examination of the visions and lifestyles of the people provides the finding that their forever setting on the road is more escaping than probing for a way out. They concern themselves more with anti-establishment than with a new order. Such attitude leads to the inevitable result that they can never find a way out other than the outlet of crimes.
