Synopsis
Yunnan is one of the most rampant regions where the women and children are trafficked, in China. Many factors can contribute to the occurrence of such crimes, such as the poverty, discrimination on the women and girls, immigration for job, etc. Because Yunnan lies in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), and shares long borders with Myanmar, Lao PDR and Vietnam, and in Yunnan, there are many mountains, it is difficult for the enforcement agencies to inspect and monitor the overall borders. The transnational crime organizations utilize such opportunity to rampantly traffick the women and children in this region. Due to the unique geographic position, Yunnan is not only the sending region of the women and children trafficked, but also the receiving region and transit region. Some women and children trafficked are forced to engage in the heavy labor or conduct the commercial sex exploitation. Some women are forced to marry with the men who buy them from the traffickers. Some children or babies are adopted illegally. In the course of being trafficking, they are often abused, raped and beaten hard. So, their bodies and mind suffer great damages. Even after a long time, they can not restore from such trauma.

The government of Yunnan and China do many jobs in preventing and combating the women and children trafficking. The relevant legislations are formulated. The enforce agencies devote the great energy and resources to the war on women and children trafficking. The other departments also provide the corresponding support and assistance. Yunnan makes great progress in combating such trafficking. But, because of the limited resources and complexity of human trafficking in the GMS, only the efforts of Yunnan can not effectively prevent and control the women and children trafficking. All the countries in the GMS must closely cooperate and coordinate in combating the women and children trafficking. They shall share the relevant information, amend and perfect the respective laws, enhance the capacity and quality of enforcement agencies and provide the humanitarianism assistance and support for the victims.

The international society also pays great attention to the women and children trafficking. In 2000, the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime was adopted by the General Assembly of United Nations. Many countries ratified and signed this Protocol. It establishes the uniform standards on the definition of trafficking in human, and requires all the countries to devote to combat the women and children trafficking. It makes great contribution for harmonizing the legislation of different countries and directing their efforts in combating the women and children. Only all the strength unites and takes the concerted actions on combating the women and children trafficking. Then, the war can be won on women and children trafficking.

Poverty is no sin, but poverty is the root of all evils. So, developing the economy and improving the people’s living level in this region will be the final resolution for the women and children trafficking in this region.
