Even if they succeeded, the eternity they got was not happiness but odd things, lonely forever. The stories of Selene and Chang-O could both support the point.
3. The moon in France culture
The moon goddess and other gods in Greek mythology all had loved, hatred, jealousy and hostility. Actually, they were similar to the ordinary human in their spirits. The description about the moon in the western poems involved more things in the human world. The following poem is a work of France poet《月之愁》:3
今晚,月亮做梦有更多的懒意,
像美女躺在许多的垫子上面,
一只手漫不经心地,轻柔地
抚弄乳房的轮廓,在入睡之前。
她的背光滑如缎,雪崩般柔软,

In the eastern people's view, the description about the moon was more or less blasphemed. The moon in Baudelaire's work was not like the one which Li Po described as being full of philosophy. In Baudelaire's poem, the moon was an independent object which flowed a string tears on the earth and into the mind of the poet. The poet who imagined and thought deeply in the moon was an independent subject. In another poem,《月的恩惠》the poet imagined that the moon approached him:4
于是,她轻柔地走下云梯,
悄无声息地穿过玻璃窗进来。
然后露出温厚的母爱躺在你身上,
又在你的脸上
抹上它的色彩。
In the poem, the moon was not only an independent object, but also an action subject. No ma tter how intimate the relation between the man and the nature, they were still independent objects. It also indicates the way of thinking in the east was different from the west traditional ways.
4. The moon in Arab culture
In China, another name of the moon is TAI YIN5,representing the female, equal to the sun that represents the male. TAI YIN stands for tender or gentle feeling. Sometimes it also signifies concealing, loneliness and misery. In various cultures of the world, it's common that the moon symbolizes the female. However, in Arab culture, the moon is often used to describe the male .Take two poem for example:

骏马带我在原野奔驰,
女人们正随意地谈论我。
大姑娘问道:
“你们是否认识那小伙?”
年轻的回答:
“是的,欧麦尔打从身旁过。”
早对我神魂颠倒的小妮子接着说:
“我们怎会不知道他呢,
难道月亮会在天空隐没?” 6

It seemed that the moon was used as a metaphor to refer to handsome men in Arab culture.
In a word, although poets in different times and cultures describe the moon in various ways, they helped people enjoy the beautiful art. Suppose we appreciate the moon only by one way and in a single angle, isn't it our great loss? Except for any means. I just want to explain different cultures can be understood and known through a media by appreciating the moon in different cultures. The moon in the folk tales and poems is the very media which can help people in different cultures enjoy and share other cultures as to open their mind and eyesight.
