1. Task Description

1.1 Introduction of the Project

Along with the advancement of China’s modernization, economy and technologyhave made a great progress. Automotive technology translation serves as the languagestransformation in automotive and relevant industries, aimed at promoting multilingualcommunication for the automotive product development, production, sales and after-saleservices. In fact, most of the technology translations in the market are curt and rigid, whichis not easy for readers to understand. Therefore the improvement of automotive technologytranslation has become urgent.

The project of the translation of X Automotive handbook for User is established onthe requirement of the company’s expanding products to the overseas market. Consideringthe overseas automotive users’ demand, the automotive technology translation should beeasy to understand and straightforward so that users are willing to read and accept it. Fromthe perspective of translation aesthetics, this report makes an analysis on the Englishtranslation of X Automotive Handbook for User to explore the beauty in the source text andspecific translation methods to bring aesthetic effects to users.

1.2 Significance of the Project

In recent years, series of cars have been expanded to overseas countries, but there isno translation version for its handbook for user and many users do not know clearly aboutevery valuable notice of vehicle driving. This translation project is aimed at providing anEnglish version for X Automotive Handbook for User, showing detailed information andnotice for overseas users’ reading. During the process of translation, translation aestheticsis applied to the project to guide the translation practice and enriches the translationaesthetics theory. There are two main significance of this project both theoretically andpractically.

Most of studies on automotive technology translation are conducted from theperspective of functional equivalence, translation shift theory and so on. This report is touse translation aesthetics theory to guide the translation of X Automotive Handbook for User. That’s to say, this report is conducted under the guidance of translation aesthetics,which combines the translation aesthetics and automotive technology translation.Theoretically, translation aesthetics can help translators understand the basic aestheticorientations in translation aesthetic activities to solve problems in inter-lingual transference.This project makes a breakthrough for the theory. Translation aesthetics is often used forthe analysis of literature translation on the transmission of beauty, but it is seldom used inautomotive technology translation. This report enriches translation aesthetics theory withcase study of automotive technology translation.
