摘要:Culture is both reflected by and carried through language. The ultimate aim of foreignlanguage education is to achieve intercultural communication. Accordingly, English teachingshould combine linguistic competence with communicative competence. However,interacting with others in foreign language involves more than mastering the accuratelinguistic knowledge but acquiring relevant cultural background information. Therefore, it isdefinitely necessary for cultivating intercultural communicative awareness to improve cultureteaching in college English education.
the sake of integrating Chinese culture into college English education, thetextbooks should be readjusted by means of increasing Chinese cultural contents. It iscertainly connected with the deviation of textbook compiling that after finishing two yearscollege English learning, most students are incapable of expressing their native culture inEnglish. On a whole, there are only few passages about Chinese culture contained in ourcollege English textbooks. Reading materials involved in teaching material are mostly aboutcultures from western countries especially America and Britain. That would certainly assiststudents to be acquainted with western culture. However, the aim of foreign languagelearning is more than to assimilate exotic culture but also to spread native culture. Then if wecan not express our own culture in English how China and Chinese culture could be known inthe world.Secondly, new ideas should be approached on culture teaching in college Englisheducation that both native culture and foreign culture should deserve the same level ofattention. Since intercultural communication means exchanges of cultural information whichcontains both input and output, Chinese English learners should take aim at obtaining andtransmitting cultural information via English as carrier.Finally, the college English teachers, as disseminators of culture, should also possessacuminous intercultural awareness. In teaching activities, teachers ought to lay equal stress onwestern culture and Chinese culture, and choose proper cultural contents and motivatestudents’ interests on Sino-foreign cultural communication. In addition, they still need toovercome disadvantages in culture teaching like the insufficient Chinese cultural componentsin college English textbooks. At this point, teachers could never stick to required teachingmaterial but choose some reading materials in relation to Chinese culture as supplementaryinformation for students to learn after class.5.3 Limitations and Suggestions for Further StudiesThere still some limitations exist in this paper. It will be addressed as follows:1) Although the evaluation of cultural contents in the New College English (SecondEdition) is based on experts’ theories, it is subjective to some extent.2) Culture is so extensive and profound that the analysis of cultural contents in eachbook is not sufficient. In addition, there are variety of textbooks are adopted in Chinesecollege English teaching, while the author only analyzes one of them. In this sense, Future3) The statistical results may be affected by the single source of the subjects comingfrom Shandong University of Technology and the relatively small size of the sample. It couldhave been more convincible that more subjects of other universities had participated in theresearch.4) The tests, questionnaires and the interviews were designed by the author herself.The questions involved are in accordance with the personal comprehension and interpretationon cultural contents and thus may not be enough scientific and precise, hence further researchremain to be done in the future.
