Chapter One Introduction
As one of the most widely used languages in the world, English becomes increasingly important in international communication. Mastering English is very essential for one’s future work and study. English writing is one of the basic English skills and also a representative of one’s comprehensive language ability. It requires students not only to master various language knowledge, such as grammar, vocabulary, but also to use them properly. So how to quickly and efficiently improve English writing skills has become an important issue for many language researchers.
1.1 Background of the Study
As two kinds of important language output, speaking and writing are closely related to each other. Researchers have done some empirical studies on the combination of these two skills in EFL writing teaching and pointed out that speaking has positive effects on improving one’s writing ability. However, most current researches are from the perspective of the nature of speaking and writing in cooperative study or related to “Process Method” in writing class. Activities of speaking mainly contain public speaking or “free talk”, which lack the control of language input. Without accurate and enough input, there is no way to produce qualified output. A great deal of input lays a foundation for output. If input is not controlled well, effects of speaking to promote writing will be greatly reduced. Memetics provides a new angle for writing teaching. The core of memetics is meme, which is understood as language element that can be copied and transmitted. Just as genes multiply by heredity, memes are spread by means of imitation. Therefore, if language learners are exposed to sufficient language memes, they will have more and greater opportunities to grasp the language. Memetics offers a new angle for EFL writing teaching because of the similarities between the process of meme transmission (assimilation-retention-expression-transmission) (Heylighen, 1998) and language acquisition (input-memorization-output-interaction) (Yang, 2008). Language memes of different levels (word, phrase, sentence pattern, discourse and so on) provide learners with sufficient and qualified input. Kinds of speaking activities, on the one hand, makes students practice the language memes. On the other hand, it helps to make up for the disadvantages of the rigid imitation in memetics.
