1.1 Background of the Research
随着中国进入WTO，英语在中国的普及，越来越多的学者和专家都意识到英语写作的重要性，互相交流和表达思想和感情的重要途径之一。不过相比其他三个外语习得的基本技能（听，说，读），写作是最难掌握的大学生，尤其非英语专业学生，中国的英语学习者的最大部分。虽然相当大比例的学生已经学到了大量的词汇和语法各种组合物的主题是他们的认知范围内，上述许多方法已被用来教英语写作，学生们还是觉得很难用英语表达自己的想法。多数学生抱怨说，它是一个头痛写出好的组合物，以满足大学英语四级考试（CET）的要求，他们不愿意不遗余力努力的写作实践。
With China’s entering into WTO and the popularization of English in China,more and more scholars and experts have realized the importance of English writingas one of the important ways to express and exchange thoughts and feelings. Howevercompared with other three basic skills in foreign language acquisition (listening,speaking and reading), writing is the most difficult to master for college students,especially non-English majors, the largest part of English learners in China. Althougha fairly large proportion of the students have learned a large amount of vocabularyand all kinds of grammars, the topics of the compositions are within their cognitiverange and above all many approaches have been used to teach English writing, thestudents still feel hard to express their ideas in English. On theother hand, the problem lies in students’ writing strategy. In the course of their writingthey usually start with Chinese meaning, and then try to find English equivalents forseparate Chinese words and finally combine them piece by piece to construct Englishsentences. Sometimes they have to give up their original Chinese ideas because theyfail to find the English equivalents. As a result, their compositions are devoid ofcontent, full of Chinglish and mistakes in collocation. In a word, the present embarrassing situation of English writing can be attributed to the lack of linguisticcompetence to express their ideas, i.e. shortage of native like fluency, accuracy andappropriateness. Fortunately, with the development of corpus linguistics, someapplied linguists discovered that language consists of ready-made lexical chunks orformulaic expressions which are a composite of form and function and a combinationof competence, performance and pragmatics. Input of lexical chunks may greatlyimprove students’ language accuracy, fluency and idiomaticity due to its uniquefeatures.
