2.1 The Connotation of General Education and Curriculum
As an indispensable part of American higher education,general education hasalways been the subject of debate and the main issue of previous higher educationreforms. In America, neither have other curriculum concepts, like general education,been the focus of higher education for so long, nor are they, like general education,impossible to reach a consensus.Put forward by A.S. Packard in the Bowdoin College of America in 1829,general education was associated with university education for the first time. Packard(1829; 300) defined general education in this way: “As an institution of highereducation,university should give the youth a classical literature and science educationwhich is one kind of education as comprehensive as possible; this kind of educationintend to provide students with the knowledge teaching of all branches, and to makethe students have a comprehensive understanding of the overall condition of theknowledge before they are committed to learning a special kind of professionalknowledge". Here, general education refers to the common and comprehensive part ofuniversity education. From the perspective of education and learning, this definitionregards general education as the preparation for special education.

2.2 Historical Evolution of General Education in Harvard University
Established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the MassachusettsBay Colony, Harvard University has been the oldest institution of higher education inthe United States. It was named after the College's first benefactor, the young ministerJohn Harvard of Charlestown. The college's first president Henry Dunster wasresponsible for teaching all the subjects to all students. With its Christian origin andinheritance of European tradition, especially its imitation of Cambridge, liberal artshad been Harvard's education focus for a long time.There were not many students during the early two hundred years. In addition,students were required to observe rules of pious decorum in the 19th century, andultimately to prove their fitness for the bachelor's degree by showing that they couldread the original of the Old and New Testament into the Latin tongue, and resolvethem logically. Traditional lectures and mechanical recitation and repeated oralpractice of the Oxford and Cambridge classics were emphasized'. During the first twohundred years, the typical Harvard college student was a young man from a privilegedbackground who underwent preparation in a religious setting for a future career as aleader in either the church, law,or medicine (Boyer & Levine, 1981; Rudolph,1977,quoted from Boning, 2007: 2)
