It is possible that the project will form the foundation of your
dissertation. This will allow you quickly to begin substantive work on your dissertation. If you do choose to base your dissertation on the project, please note that you cannot actually use the project to form the first part of your dissertation, since the project will have already been assessed.
The project should be of no more than 3,000 words in length and should be organised as follows: a short abstract (150 words); an executive summary (350 words; see the journal European
Financial Management for examples); an introduction; the main body of the project; a conclusion; and a list of
References.
The project may be seen as comprising at least two main elements:
(i) A statement of the particular issue of finance/economics to be addressed: this introduction will include a clear statement of the aims and objectives of the project, the question(s) to be examined, the importance of those questions and the potential role of financial/economic theory in answering the question(s).
(ii) A critical review of the relevant literature, both theoretical and applied: this section will identify in detail what conclusions, if any, are possible given the current state of the literature and will seek to identify what are the strengths and weaknesses of that literature. This section will conclude with an indication of the extent to which further empirical work, using either different techniques and/or using different data sets from those in the existing literature, has the potential for furthering our understanding of the phenomenon chosen for study.
The project should be typed, well presented and structured and should be typewritten, double-spaced; Appendices should only be used when judged to be strictly necessary to the understanding of the project. The work should include foot
notes where appropriate and all references should be included in a properly constructed Reference List.
Assessment criteria
The following is information provided to markers of the project:
Students have carried out the project unsupervised. In examining the work please look for (i) awareness of the literature; (ii) evidence that the candidate identifies, and has a good understanding of, the relevant issues; and (iii) a satisfactory literary presentation. In particular, the following should be considered in evaluating the project:
1. Does the work described in the project show awareness of the literature in the field
2. Where appropriate, state whether the work carried out in the project is technically correct
3. Do you judge that the candidate has correctly identified the main relevant issues?
4. Is there evidence that the candidate has a good understanding of relevant research questions?
5. Is the project well structured and coherent?
6. Is the project satisfactory in its literary presentation?
What makes a good Project?
There are many ways to write a project and we have no particular model answer in mind. The following are some of the points we are looking for:
•A survey of a particular area. This usually, but not always includes surveying some empirical work.
•You should explain the main issues in your chosen area and their wider relevance
•For each of the main papers you survey, you should:
1.Explain the
