作者首先将给出于“谚语”的中英文定义。然后根据不同的文化习俗作者将提供一些谚语翻译的实例。作者将会对中英文谚语的相同点和不同点做一个比较，尝试找出中英谚语的一些特征。通过对这些实例的研究作者将尝试找出一些翻译方法，例如：直译法、意译法、增译法、省略法、借用法、还原法。其中“意译”、“增译”、“省略”将会给与重点解释。在最后作者将会对各种方法总结并对未来提出设想。
此论文共收集了四十个谚语和它们各自的翻译案例。这些案例摘自六本关于中英文翻译的学术性书籍且涉及到所有作者试图研究的翻译方法。这些书籍均为著名中英文翻译专家所著。
通过作者尝试性的研究得出了六个中文谚语的翻译方法：字面翻译法、意译法、增译法、省略法、借用法、还原法。作者希望这个尝试性的研究能够对其他的同学有一定的用途，希望这篇论文能引起其他同学对研究谚语翻译方法的兴趣。

Language and Culture are closely related to each other. Proverbs play a very important role in cultural exchange and communication. Proverbs are widely used in almost all kinds of articles, novels, folk stories, movies, even news. So we can’t ignore it. And it is one of the most difficult parts in translating process.
The purpose of this research is to find out strategies on Chinese-English proverb translation.
The author would first give the Definition of what is “proverb” in English and then the Chinese definition of“谚语”from a Chinese dictionary.
And then the author would provide many proverb translation examples, the author would compare Chinese proverbs with English proverbs to see their similarities and their differences to get a better understanding of different cultures showed from proverbs and the characteristics of proverbs. By studying these examples the author would try to find out the strategies used in different situations such as “borrowing proverbs from target language”, “literal translation”, “free translation”, “omission”, “addition and explanation”, “back translation”. Among these strategies, free translation, addition, leaving out, would be given more attention to. Last the author would summarize the strategies used for translating proverbs and look into its future.
There are 45 Chinese proverbs along with their English translations are collected here. These Examples are concerned with all the strategies that the author is going to explore, and they are from six academic books concerning Chinese-English translation skills written by famous Chinese-English translation experts.
According to the author’s tentative study, the author concluded 6 translation strategies on
translating Chinese proverbs, they are 1)Borrowing Proverbs from the Target Language, 2) LiteralTranslation,3)Free Translation,4)Omission 5)Addition and Explanation,6)Back Translation.
The author hope this tentative study could be useful for other students, and hope this thesis could lead fellow students to more analysis on proverb translation strategies.
