1.1.2 Definition of Culture
Culture could be referred as the pattern of human activity and the symbols thatgive significance to these activities. Culture could manifest itself through thecostumes, literature, art, customs, language, religion and religious rituals. The cultureof a region also consists of its people or residents and their way of life. In differentareas of the world cultures vary, being different across the land boundaries.Meanwhile the diverse cultures would bring about the diversity in people throughoutthe world. What is the definition of culture? Then let us read through the basiccharacteristics of culture and its fundamental elements.Culture is shared. It means that culture belongs to a group of people instead ofindividuals. People shape a set of values, beliefs and customs based on the region theylive in, depending on the climatic situations they thrive in and their historical heritage. These common principles of life shape their culture. Culture does not only belong toany individual, but rather it is shared by any group of people in the world.Culture is learned. It means that culture is passed through generations, andgenerations learn to follow the customs and traditions as their treasure. The membersof a culture share certain ideals, which shape their lives. The ideals they base theirlives on is a part of their culture. Culture is passed from one generation to another, resulting in a continual of traditions that are a part of culture. The language, theliterature and the art forms pass across generations. Culture is learned, understood andadopted by the younger generations of society. No individual is born with a sense ofhis/her culture. He/she has to learn it.

2.1 Origin of Canadian English
Tracing the historical forces that gave rise to the English-speaking population aswell as its expansion in Canada is an indispensable part of understanding the presentform of Canadian English, for these external, non-linguistic forces, as important asinternal and linguistic factors, have also determined the modern characteristics ofpresent Canadian English apart from being responsible for very exsistence ofCanadian English. In view of Canada’s relative youth, the current form of CanadianEnglish could be closely tied up with its immigration history: who first broughtEnglish to Canada and where they came from; with which people in whichproportions, how this initial settlement was built upon; and finally, how today’sspeakers of Canadian English communicate.By and large Canadian English is considered as the outcome of the two earliestsettlement waves.
