Therefore, it is essential forresearchers to pay attention to the similar word access. Besides, since the study of lexicalacquisition has already drawn many researchers' attention, and many related techniques areextensively applied to the teaching and learning field，this thesis turns the spotlight ontothe lexical access, especially the access of similar words.

1.1 Research background

Newman and German (2002) studied the influence oflexical factors, known as neighborhood density and neighborhood frequency. Findingsindicated that these factors did influence lexical access: Words which were high inneighborhood frequency, low in neighborhood density for the language were easier toname. Further, the number of neighborhoods that were more frequent than the target wordalso had an effect on the word's ease of retrieval.
In Newman and German's research，they put forward two related factors, namely,neighborhood density and neighborhood frequency. Apart from their study, other scholarsalso studied the lexical factors, known as phonological and orthographic neighborhooddensity. Ziegler, Muneaux and Grainger (2003) investigated phonological and orthographicneighborhood effects in auditory word recognition in French. In an auditory lexicaldecision task，phonological neighborhood (PN) produced the standard inhibitory effect(words with many neighborhoods produced longer latencies and more errors than wordswith few neighborhoods). In contrast, orthographic neighborhood (ON) produced afacilitatory effect. It is argued that the PN effect reflects lexical competition betweensimilar sounding words while the ON effect reflects the consistency of the sublexical mapping between phonology and orthography. The results join an accumulating number ofstudies suggesting that orthographic information influences auditory word recognition.These three researchers opened up another two relevant factors, and studied theinterrelationship between phonological and orthographic neighborhood.It is indeed' that many researchers studied the lexical factors that influenced the lexicalaccess，but all of them shared the same point that they carried out the experiments withintheir native languages. While how the lexical factors influence the lexical access of secondlanguage learners, especially among the Chinese English learners deserves the essentialattention in the Chinese English study.
