摘要:As the present study aims to explore the problems concerning point of view andstance in English majors' argumentative writing, to find out the reasons accounting forthem, and to give some suggestions to improve students' writing skills。

Chapter OneIntroduction


1.1Research Background
With the deepening of economic globalization, English, as an internationallanguage, plays an important role in the world communication of politics, economy,culture, etc. Therefore, the need for people with high foreign language skills is gainingmuch more attention in the present situation. Writing, as one of the four basic languageskills, is more complex than the other three in that it is a much more systematic way toexpress ideas and feelings and thus much more difficult for people to learn, especiallyfor EFL (English as Foreign Language) learners.As stated by Walters (1983: 17), “writing is the last and perhaps the most difficultskill students learn if ihey ever do". In mainland China (Liu, 2000), writing in Englishas a foreign language once was not given much emphasis, but now it has gained moreattention owing to the fact that EFL learners in China have to write papers and thesesin English at secondary and tertiary levels,and send application letters in English toforeign universities, etc. As a result, more and more universities are setting Englishwriting course for students in order to improve their writing ability. However, theaverage level of students' writing is still low and thus there is still a long way to gobefore they are competent to write good English compositions. It is commonly seenthat “many students can write grammatically correct sentences but fail to progressbecause they are unable to organize their ideas in a manner acceptable to an Englishreader' (Cooper, 1979: 6).

1.2 Research Objectives and Significance
Xiong (2001) holds that point of view is an important aspect lo explore thecoherence of the text. In recent years, there are some scholars such as Bai (2004), Yangand He (2008) who have explored the point of view in students' writing. I lowcver,most of the studies focus only on one of the linguistic markers of point of view such asperson pronouns, which leaves much room for Further exploration. In addition, it iscommonly accepted that argumentative writing is a complex activity as it requires thewriter to take position on a controversial issue and meanwhile give reasons andsupporting evidence to convince readers to agree with his or her position (Intraprawat,2002). In other words, stance expressing is another integrated part which is of greatsignificance in argumentative writing and it has aroused the attention of some scholarssuch as Xu (2007) and Liu (2007), who explore the authorial stance markers inacademic research discourse. In spite of the previous studies on point of view andstance,there is lack of analysis on concrete examples of the problems concerning bothpoint of view and stance. Therefore, the present study intends to fill in the gap bymaking a tentative study on point of view and stance in English majors’ Englishargumentative writing.

2.1 Previous Studies on Point of View
Point of view is a common term in the field of stylistics and literary criticism andthe study of it has a long history since 1884 when The Art of Fiction was published.The importance of it can be best illustrated by what Short (1999: 172) once has said,“The notion of point of view has been of central importance in twentieth centurycriticism of the novel”.
