In recent years, it has become a hot issue in linguistics.As this thesis tries to investigate the point of view in English majors" argumentativewriting, the emphasis is only put on the related surveys restricted to the field oflinguistics.With regard to the study on point of view, it is inevitable to mention Fowler (1996)and Simpson (1993)，who are among the first ones to introduce the concept of point ofview into linguistics and have contributed a lot to help understand the essence of pointof view. In Linguistic Criiicisw. Fowler (1996) claims that point of view ought to be astandard part of linguistic theory, if linguistics manages to extend itself beyond thesentence to account for the communicative processes of whole texts.

2.2 Previous Studies on Stance
In recent years, the study on stance has rcccived much more attention inlinguistics and other related disciplines. Many scholars have done researches on stancefrom different perspectives which expand the study scope of stance. As the nature ofstance is heterogeneous and multifaceted, it is difficult to reach agreement on whatstance actually is. Therefore, various definitions have been put forward by scholarsamong whom the most famous ones are Biber and Finegan (1988, 1989), Hunston andThompson (2000), Hyland (2002)，etc. Biber and Finegan (1988: 1) claim that stance is“the lexical and grammatical expression of attitudes, feelings, judgments, orcommitment concerning the message", which includes speaker's degree ofcommitment to the truthfulness of the message. As to I lunston and Thompson (2000:23), stance is a “broad cover term for the expression of the speaker or writer's altitudeor stance towards, viewpoint on, or feelings about the entities or propositions that lie orshe is talking about". According to Hyland (2002: 116), stance “expresses a textual‘voice’ or community recognized personality” that can be seen as “the ways thatwriters intrude to stamp their personal authority onto their arguments, or step back anddisguise iheir involvement". Although there are slight differences in the dcfinilion ofthe term “stance", they all hold the same view that stance takes an evaluation function.And in the present study, we take stance as the speaker's or writer's disposition toexpress attitudes, judgments and commitment towards the linguistic message. In orderto better understand the csscnce of stance, it is ncccssary to mention some relatedterms such as modality, evaluation, alTcct, hedges, ctc. As the present research Ibcuscson stance in English majors' argumentative writing, only those mostly related studieswould be included in the literature review.
