摘要:It is usual to hear English major students complain about the lack of opportunities topractice oral English in the classroom, generally, they have study the vocabulary andgrammar very well, but they still cannot communicate with the native speaker fluently, theauthor thought the reason of this phenomenon has two aspects.
IV Data Analysis and Discussion
4.1 Data Collection and Discussion of the Class Observation
Class observation is the main method which the author used to collect corpus data. The author attends four classes and observed the whole English reading class processing, from the observed situation, the conclusion could be drawn as following. The first worthy phenomenon is the numbers of turns occupied by teachers andstudents in classroom interaction, the numbers of turns has something to do with howmuch opportunity the teacher has given to students. When we observed the classroom, wefound this is closely related to the kind of activity the teacher is using in that class. As wecan see, if the teacher spoke more, it will leave few chances for students to speak, and theresults and their percentage in the total 50 minutes (a period of class) are presented asTable 4.1.
Conclusion
The teacher dominates the class process, decides who answer the question, and hasthe absolute power in the English classroom, therefore, the students have less chances topractice their communicative competence, this is the typical teacher-centered teachingmodel. What’s more, the turn-length of students’ is much shorter and less complex thanteachers’, sometimes students just use a word or a phrase to answer questions, whereas thecomplex sentence groups are much more frequently used in teachers’ turns, this is due tothe lack of speaking practice. With the development of the student-centered classroommodel, more and more teachers should pay attention to give the students enoughopportunities to practice the target language; the quality of the students’ turns in classroomshould be improved in the future.
