Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research Background
The concept of time is one of the most important and essential part in human'scognitive structure. It relates closely to many other fields. Philosophers believe thattime is objective, and even beyond itself,and becomes the foundation of all motion,change,that is to say, it is an existence of absolute objectivity. In linguistics, it notonly allows us to know about the moment of time,but also shows us the time ofsituation and the relative relations between the moment of utterance and time ofsituation. Time is a line through the spoken and written English,so it takes thefiindamental place in linguistics.In recent decades, with the intense attention paid to the language learning, thereis a surge of study on the time expressed in texts and speeches. However, theexpressions and classifications of time are quite different &om various aspects. Thus,different classifications are used by scholars to examine time in language, such as,“the deictic expressions" of time and “non-deictic expressions of time" (HeZhaoxiong, 2000),"the position of a time span (TAP)”,“the duration of a time span(TAD)”,“the frequency of a time span (TAQ)”,“the comparison of time spans(TAG)" (Klein 1995). But all these researchers are insightful and can help enhance ourunderstanding of time.

1.2 Aims and Significance
The aims of this study is to examine the use of temporal adverbials detected in thenarrative writings written by Chinese English majors and the native English writers bymeans of comparison of the frequencies and features found in two comparablecorpora. By counting the frequencies in the comparable corpora, it will be evident forus to see the different ways employed by Chinese English learners and native Englishwriters. By using two comparable corpora of Chinese English majors' narratives andnative English writers' works,scrutinizes the use of temporal adverbials in thosecorpora. From this perspective, its systemic analysis of temporal adverbials in ChineseEnglish learners' narratives can give some suggestions on improving the Englishteaching and learning. Besides, for more convincing conclusions, this study is mainlyquantitative, and is assisted on the qualitative ways of analysis.

Chapter Two Literature Review


2.1 Narrative Writings and Structures of Narratives
Narrative refers to a literary form which reflects the author's thoughts andemotional life through the description of a person, an event, a landscape and an objectin life. There are two senses——the broad sense of narrative and the narrow one. Forthe broad one, it includes the literatures like essays and novels,and for the narrow one,it consists of the passages which is about the portray of the change and developmentof a person, an event,a landscape or an object by the method of description, such asletters,reportage and travel notes etc.It is the literary theorists who began to study the basic and essential componentfactor of the narratives. There are three requirements proposed by Prince, G (1973) forstructuring narratives which are the temporality, the causality and how the narrativeworks appeal to the readers.
