CHAPTER IV A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THETHREE TRANSLATIONS OF FOREVER AMBER

4.1 Brief Introduction to Forever Amber and Its Three Translators
In this section, the author will mainly introduce Kathleen Winsor, her ForeverAmber as well as Fu Donghua, the translator officially publishing Chinese version ofForever Amber and two more contemporary translators.Forever Amber, a historical and romantic novel, won the favor of the public onceit was published in 1944, and it has been translated into many languages and reprintedregularly since its birth. Forever Amber is thought to be the only one that can becompared favorably with Gone with the Wind. The novel sets the 17thcentury England, namely Restoration England, as itshistorical background, which gives the readers a panorama of the Restoration England.Winsor describes a vivid picture of the court, society, politics, fashion, plagues etc. atthat time. It mainly tells us an abandoned pregnant and penniless 16 years old AmberSt. Clare on the teeming streets of London, by using her wits, beauty, and courage, manages to climb up to the highest position a woman could achieve in RestorationEngland—that of favorite mistress of the Merry Monarch, Charles II (王新春&李春光, 2009). From whores and highwaymen to courtiers and noblemen, from eventssuch as the Great Plague and the Fire of London to the intimate passions of ordinaryand extraordinary men and women, Amber experiences them all. But throughout hertrials and escapades, she remains, in her heart, true to the one man she really loves, the one man she can never have (王蕊, 2012). Frequently compared to Gone with theWind, Forever Amber is the other great historical romance, outselling every otherAmerican novel of the 1940s—despite being banned in Boston for its sheer sexualdescription. A book to read and reread, this edition brings back to print anunforgettable romance and a timeless masterpiece.

CONCLUSION

In this section, the major findings and limitation and suggestions for furtherstudies are presented. By conducting a comparative study of three translation versionsof Forever Amber, against the theoretical background of relevance theory, the authortries to verify that the main reasons of the different versions of the same source textand the failure in translation all result from the different cognitive contexts thetranslators possess.Relevance theory proposed by Sperber and Wilson is a revolution to the study ofcommunication. It divides the communication into two processes: the coding anddecoding process and inferential process. For a communication, verbal or non-verbal,the inferential process is inevitable. The inference of a communication relies much ontheir cognitive contexts. That is, facing the speaker’s manifestation, the hearer woulddraw inference on the basis of the information stored in his or her cognitive context.Cognitive context is defined as “a psychological construct, a subset of thehearer’s assumptions about the world” (Sperber & Wilson, 1995, p.15). That is,cognitive context to an individual is no longer any objective items; it is one’sassumptions about them, which are stored in the mind. In communication, theseassumptions are all ready to be activated to become the context that the hearer canrely on to arrive at an interpretation that is most relevant from his or her point of view.
