4.1 Ideology Evolvement
Hu Shi's poetry translation takes the role of the construction of a new culture firstly inthe sphere of ideology. Those translation works took place in the specific period when thepeople with visions began to doubt the traditional ideas and believes and the westerncultures started to exert its influence. Against such background, the translation works tookthe historical role which on one hand was to overthrow the old-fashioned classic Chineseliterature which could not serve the reform and renovation of society, on the other hand，those poetry brought new thoughts and ideas into Chinese culture and literature thus to construct a new culture. Those translation works are by no means merely interlingualtransfer but the propelling force of Chinese culture towards mainstream of world literatureand culture. In such process, the methods of translation interacted with the call of the timesand the need of their own improvement. In accordance with his pioneering role in the thirdhigh tide of translation, Hu Shi advocated replacing the classical Chinese with vernacularChinese and chose poetry translation to verify his idea of literature revolution and reflectthe development of times.

Conclusion

As one of the most influential cultural icon in the New Culture Movement, HuShi was the first to start literary revolution, the first to advocate and translate in baihualanguage, and the first to create baihua poems as a new literature genre. Hu Shi's poetrytranslation, as the creation, changed and added new sense to the idea of poetry in traditionalChinese culture. His literary creation and renovation began with the translation of westernliterary masterpieces, which brought him great success. Through the analyses of Hu Shi'spoetry translation from the perspective of cultural translation, this thesis put up the newnotion as translation evolvement.The major finding of this thesis is that Hu Shi's poetry translation boasts holistic anddynamic features and formed a procedure of translation evolvement. Translationevolvement refers to the procedure of translation development of certain authors or duringcertain period of time. The construction of new culture in ideologies and poetics throughtime is a gradual process as evolvement. However, translation evolvement shouldn't bedeployed to the explanation of a random selection of some translation work. The analysisof Hu Shi's poetry translation shows that besides the experimental and purposeful nature ofHu Shi's poetry translation, the whole procedure of evolvement could be summarized andevaluated in certain variables: ideologies and poetics.
