Therefore they can be specified as warfare, official violence and revolution.According to Arendt, revolution is one of the forms of violence. Revolutionappears when man feels offensive as well as there is no way to abreact. Where there isoffensive, there arouses indignation. On the basis of Arendt’s analysis, during thehistory of revolution, rage is always one of the safety fuses “where invariablymembers of the upper classes touched off and then led the rebellious of the oppressedand downtrodden” (63).Another form of violence is the governors govern over the governed people.During the long history of human civilization, there has never existed a governmentwhich “exclusively based on the means of violence” (Arendt 50). Consequently, indomestic affairs, according to Arendt that “violence functions as the last resort ofpower against criminals or rebels” (51). That is to say, violence serves as the toolagainst those individuals who “refuse to be overpowered by the consensus of themajority” (51). Thus the distinguished characteristic of this form its collectiveness.In On Violence, Arendt comes up with the causes of violence mainly from twoaspects. The first one is rage, and the second one comes from the link between powerand violence.

CHAPTER V TALBOT’S INITIATION THROUGHREFLECTIONS ON VIOLENCE

The growth of the protagonist Talbot is accompanied by his awakening of thetragedy caused by violence. During the process of investigating the death of Colley,Talbot is astonished by the cruel fact that Colley’s death is caused by violence.Besides the reflections on the tragedy caused by violence, knowing mistakes andcorrecting mistakes also herald the protagonist Talbot’s initiation.

5.1 Talbot’s Reflections on the Accomplices in Causing the Tragedy
