There are a lot of appraisal studies working ondifferent type of genres, such as academic text, advertisement, political news,literature and so on. News discourse has long drawn the attention of researchers, andit has been studied from different perspectives. Although news discourse is not a freshfield studied with respect to Appraisal Theory, English political news discourse hasnot been studied profoundly, especially the comparisons between two kinds ofgenres. There is still large space to explore.Since the advancement of Chinese international trade，some economists and USgovernment are imposing great pressure on the appreciation of Chinese currency.Obama has frequently attacked China over the RMB issue. Whether China is pushingworld economy into a great inflationary slump is becoming increasingly contentious.In the year 2010，the issue became the focus dispute between China and USA，and thenews reports on RMB exchange rate also attracted attention from experts and ordinarypeople all around the world.Most media critics and critical discourse analysis practitioners argue that themainstream media doesn't just reflect the reality，but rather is constrained by theeconomic, political and institutional ownership context which prevents media fromgiving objective reports. The American news media, because of their wide spread andgreat influence on the readers, is the most important channel by which China's imageis transmitted to the general public. As the representative of American media，NewYork Times is chosen as the sample being analyzed.

　　The significance of the thesis lies in the following aspects: *By adopting Marin's Appraisal Theory to the fourteen news texts (five fromBusiness column and five from Opinion column) from the reputable news media inAmerica, New York Times, the researcher endeavors to uncover the hidden ideologiesof reports towards China. Firstly, overall attitudinal analysis will reveal how reportersor commentators convey their attitude in political news discourse.Secondly, there is no denying that news discourse analysis is gaining greaterpopularity，however，attitudinal comparisons between different genres of Englishnews discourse seems to be neglected.
